Intro and Photos
Hi All,
I’ve been looking for the past several years for a 911 to replace the Venetian Blue 1988 911 I’d traded in back in 2000. This car, a one owner 1985 with 41,000 miles found me through European Locators and followed me home last week. Of all the cars I’d looked at, this one by far drives the best, is tighter, has the fewest air leaks and rattles, and was the closest possible to a 22 year old new car. PPI showed 180 on all cylinders and condition was described as “perfect”. The 915 shifts better than any other I’ve sampled. It simply felt like a good and comfortable fit. Plus, I couldn’t pass up the color combination – Moss Green Metallic over, well, not sure what the interior color is, but I like it. I plan to keep it as close to stock as possible. The only work I’ve done so far are new hood shocks and the Sucro headlight relay kit in preparation for H4 headlights. The only other changes for the spring might be to replace the original speakers – any recommendations for speakers that fit the original locations – fit is more important than ultimate sound quality, and tires to replace the Goodyear NCT VR set. I’m not sure when Goodyear stopped making NCT tires. They look just about new, but I’d rather err on the side of safety. Aside from that, after storage for the New England winter, I’ll have the local specialist shop go through it in spring to establish a sound baseline for maintenance. Thanks to those here who advised waiting for the right car – it is possible to find one. welcome back

Welcome!
A very fine year (the best IMHO ;) ) Beautiful, classic color and superb interior. Congrats! |
Looks good.
That interior looks like new!! Congrats, and don't let your passengers eat greasy food while in the car :) |
Well, would you look at that!
Mine followed me home (actually, it was more like I dragged it home against it's objections--pouring rain, brief period of small hail--so much for "never been driven in the rain") a year ago over Labor Day weekend. Needless to say, like the color. Mine's about 115k for mileage, but the top end and tranny were rebuilt around 85k with very recent brake work. But I've got quite a bit of road rash I plan on working on next summer. Not sure what the interior color technically is--grey beige? I've got champagne in mine. But I really like the interior color around the edge of the console and shift boot on yours. And yes, replace the tires. I put Yoko 100s on mine after I thought I could try getting one more year out of the roughly 8-year-old tires and shreaded a rear about a month after getting the car...not worth taking a chance. Also put H4s on, with black rings. At some point will cover the black with a pair of painted rings, but the black looks fine (didn't think the chrome H4s would look right on that dark a finish). You've got yourself a beaut... Goes without saying, but have fun! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1165883919.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1165884115.jpg |
Roger,
Now that's a good looking car! Paul |
Superb Specimen.

PS - drool. What a great color combo. I'm seriously jonesing for a 911 again. Can you give us an ~idea~ of what you paid for that thing?
|
Nice, I like that it is different!

Looks like a quality purchase. I used to be a primary colors guy but after buying a paint to sample blue 911 I now appreciate the variety of colors I see out there. Case in point I arrived at a car show last year in my guards red 911 and as I proudly parked my car I overheard someone yell out "not another red 911". As I surveyed the area I had to agree the reds did indeed rule the day. Welcome aboard.

Hey Paul.
Found another photo. Here's your car with the H4s, black rings... For what it's worth... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1165977519.jpg |
I believe the interior color is Gray Green, first offerd in 1985 as well as 1986.

Thanks Roger,
The H4 lights are on my project list for the spring -- they look great. The Sucro relay kit did seem to make the headlights and the instrument lights a little brighter, but the US spec headlights still aren't that great. Dave, thanks for the tip on the interior color. Sounds like exactly what it is. Paul |
Nice car! Welcome back!!

PSJoyce,
Great find. I looked at a few cars Dave had and should have used him for my search. Who are you using locally for service? Anyone on the Cape? I'm on the South Shore. Sounds like a spring ride for us M*******s will need to be schdeuled! |
I've been very happy with Sports Imports here in Falmouth. They work on a pretty good mix of older to newer Porsches and other European cars. Scott knows his stuff -- he just bought a 964 cab -- and has enough experience to diagnose many problems with a test drive. Plus, I can ride my bicycle home after dropping the car off.
So far, I’m happy with this winter. Hadn’t really expected to be able to get the car out at all this year, and tomorrow looks great! Paul |
I have a similar Porsche. 1987 Targa
These speakers will fit well: (copied direct from my Porsche spreadsheet file) New-2 Polk DB525 Door Speakers 07/08/06 18851 miles My Garage Circuit City $95.84 Remove the side pocket door panels to pull out the old speakers. You might have to take a rat tail file and remove a very small amount from the plastic enclosures set into the door frame. The Polk speaker frames are a tad too large. New-2 Blaupunkt Rear Speakers THx462 07/11/06 18885 miles My Garage Mid West $63 From the way your picture looks, your porsche door speaker grills will fit perfect over the Polks. I couldn't find a pair of rear deck speakers where the original grills fit. The Blaupunkt work fine and include well designed grills. If I'm not mistaken, your car was on ebay for a number of weeks this past April. I contacted the dealer in Natick, who was selling the car for some lady wanting to remodel her kitchen. I also had a long conversation with her mechanic, who assured me the car was well cared for. I was partial to the green paint and gray/green interior. I made a half-hearted offer of $19000. I ended up buying a one owner, 1987 Carrera with only 16793 miles from a dentist in Indianapolis. On the drive back to Cincinnati, I had the 4 original tires replaced. Mounted/balanced - Northwest Frame 4 new: Pirelli 6000 15" 05/04/06 16793 TireRack Tire Rack 543.82 Tires Mount/Balance 05/11/06 16821 N/W Frame N/W Frame 91.24 (chopped syntax from porsche spreadsheet) |
Wow Paul, that interior is really in great shape. Nice find!
