hard to shift when cold

1987 g50 911 coupe. Drove this weekend and very difficult to move shifter into 1st. Had to start in 2nd sometimes 4th at light. Could not get into 1st even with significant pressure. Afternoon warmed up and shifted just fie. Any ideas?

My g50 is always a bit stiff when it is cold but not like you describe. Do you know when the fluid was last changed? You might consider changing the fluid with Mobil 1 or other synthetic. There are many threads on this, do a search. If you do change the oil make sure to get the fill plug out before the drain plug. Seems the fill plug tends to be harder to get out then the drain plug.

The other possibility is the rubber center clutch is disintegrating. When mine went it was hard to get into gear until all the rubber found a new home.

This is what a clutch disc looks like after it goes. The rubber chunks keep the disk from allowing engagement of the gears. Could get into gears until the rubber bits were distributed around the pressure plate. The ran the car for another 1000 miles with out incident, lucky.
