Chain Tensioner Severity?

I'm abusing the board nowadays, think I'll change my footer as I'm asking all of the stupid questions.

That said...here's another: I have my SC into the shop right now for maintenance and repacking of the front bearings...understandable.

He tells me the Chain Tensioners have not been upgraded yet and there is a knocking in the engine now. To the point where they are afraid to drive the car.

The car has 128 on the clock; I've driven it spiritedly for the 3 years/3k i've had on the car.

I haven't heard any knocking, etc from the car, this brings me to 2 questions...

1. How can I look at the engine and tell if the upgrade has actually been done or not? The PO treated this car like a princess and it would surprise me if it wasn't done before.

2. Is it possible for it to 'turn bad' that quickly? I've never had an ounce of problems with this car, no knocking, no nothing...now he's telling me i should drive it home, put it in my garage and don't disturb it until I get it done.

He is asking just under 3k to do the job...is everything balancing correctly? This seems sudden/drastic in my eyes.

Any help would be VERY APPRECIATED

Quesion 1: Lift the rear hood and lood at the chain tensioner covers. If they have an oil line that goes directly into the cover, then you have the upgrade. The upgrade are oil pressured as opposed to the old spring pressured ones. The oil line goes throught the plate and hooks up with the new tensioner. The tensioner is inside of the chain tensioner housing, behind the cover.

Question 2: I would think that yes, it can turn bad that quickly, but I am a new mechanic. I have read, though, that if the old chain tensioners go bad it will be disastrous. I haven't installed them the new tensioners, but I removed them so I am sure that it is do-able, but I think you would need to re-time the cams and that would be hard to do. But I am not sure you need to re-time the cams so look in Wayne's book on the upgrade. I don't have my copy handy.

$3K is about $2K too much for chain tensioners. Time for a new mechanic. Buy Wayne's book as to how much projects should cost, even if you don't plan on doing them yourself.

See the pic of the chain tensioner oil line:

+1 on the overprice--if indeed $3k is just for the tensioners. You should pay between $750-1000. Think I paid $800.

the knocking noise situation sounds fishy to me.

$3k for tensioners is prison sex. Time to thank the mechanic for being greedy and let him know you'll never be back. That job's half a day of labor (if that) for a production shop.
