Are Late SC CAMs or Carrera Cams on a 2.7?

General question about putting later CAMs in a 2.7.

So far I have the 4 bearing cam carriers so that should not be an issue.

My question is, will the Carrera cams work in a 2.7? I have read that the later SC cams will work if you change out the sprocket setup for the gear. (I may have worded this incorrectly, please correct me).

If these will physically fit, is the grind too aggressive for a 2.7 with CIS Cams? I know the 964 grid is too aggressive but what about the Carrera grind? Was there even a difference between the SC and Carrera?

All SC and Carrera cams are the same. The only difference is in the indexing.

Should work fine. Neither cam has any overlap to affect the airflow sensor. 964 cams should work fine too. There was a thread abut this recently.

Jerry Kroeger

I believe the 964 valve lift causes problems with the 2.7 CIS pistons.

I mainly wanted to know about the Carrera CAMs, as more people change to the 964 there seems to be more of them floating around.

Thanks for the reply!

Chris,

If you don't mind posting the process of what you had to replace and what problems you ran into that would be very helpful.

Like with the four bearing CAMs, did you have to replace or add additonal oil lines?

964 Cams

I got 2.7 cams that were cut to a 964 spec from elgin cams.

The advice I got was that there would be plenty of clearance between the valve and piston for the non-S model engine because the compression ratio is only 8 to 1.

But I am installing S heads on the car as well. So we shall see what numbers will come out of this.

I too have the MSD, and the pertronix. Also I went with the Bursch 2 in 1 out muffler set up. I had heard too many complaints about the Dansk. It sounds really nice also.

Also I am going with the Sachs power clutch set up with the Fidanza flywheel. This will improve acceleration as well.

This is my winter project...in process now.

I will post the results... From 150 hp, 0-60 in 7 sec to ?

We shall see.

Chris

I asked camgrinder 1 year ago or so and he said the SC profile would be max. 964 was out, at least on a 8.5:1 S.

I wounder how much power an SC profile would add to an 2.7. Anyone know?

The information that Magnus got was what I had received too. The compression difference probably accounts for the difference.

Does a 4 bearing SC cam tower fit a 2.7? Does it require any modifications?

4 bearing does fit. As for mods, that is why I posted. I have heard that oil lines may be different but it has never been made clear.

I wonder how it works with the head studs.
You can see and torque/re-torque the headstuds throu the cam towers, but that can't be possible with a SC camtower on a 2.7?

I think the only difference is the 4th journal.
