How much cooling out of these?
Is anyone running both of these:

No doubt they both cool the oil (as does the Cool Collar - barely). The question is how much... The top device most likely cools immeasurably, while the bottom device maybe a degree or two or more (depends on how fast the oil is moving through it, ambient temp, an airflow around the device). IMHO, neither would be noticeable on the gauge.
If you want real improved cooling, you need to install finned lines, a fan on a Carrera cooler, a second oil cooler, etc...

I have the carrera cooler with fan. It keeps things very cool. I came across these things and wondered if they would cool things down a bit more. I figure the cooler the better.

Copper fins soldered to the tank would probably be more effective than both, combined!

Within reason. Both those gizmos are not worth the money they cost, in my book. If you really need better cooling, buy a bigger oil cooler, if you don't need better cooling, don't waste your money. Remember that these engines are air cooled. Often a good clean of the cylinder fins and ensuring that no air is passed by is worth a few degrees - free! ![]() George |

Well, they are infact air/oil cooled. Hence the big volume of oil in the tank.......
I question the effectiveness of both, especially the sump plate. I think if your sump plate is fubared, then why not buy this one if you are buying one anyways, but I don't think it is money well spent if you are not in the market for a new plate. The other cooler may have some effectiveness, but I would love to see some real world data to back it up. I sold a 3.2 28 row brass fender cooler (the good one) for around what the second gizmo costs. It kept my hopped up 3.2 cool even on hot track days. I would look at the used fender cooler as a better option for your SC, especially considering it will cost about the same.... Cheers

I agree with George and Jeff. Although, I did install one of those little black air scoops in the front-right side marker, and my oil temps went down about 10 degrees. Go figure...

You can install a lower oil temp thermostat in the Carrera cooler and wire the switch for manual operation:
oil cooler fan t'stat and switch installation I've yet to box in the bottom of the cooler. These days (winter), it seldom gets to the first mark on the gauge in my 16-mile commute. Hot summers stuck in front of an accident, I've seen it climb above the middle mark to about the 50% position. T'stat turns fan on then, but you can switch it on earlier if desired (I usually do). Doesn't do anything at speed, but in traffic, yeah. ianc

That's a great Thread. The PO actually did put a manual switch using the rear wiper switch just like you did. The Porsche guys think alike. It would be nice to have that low temp activation. But what I really found useful was that foam. Mine is shot & I would love to replace it. Thanks ianc.
