Strange Targa top on a 1991 964
I looked at a 964 today. Seemed in good condition, but I noticed that the targa top appeared to be new. On a test drive I heard a lot of wind noise and realized (or so I thought) that the windows were both open about 1/4 of an inch. I attempted to roll them up and realized the windows were fully up. There was a 1/4 inch gap between the top of the windows and the weather stripping that they would normally contact.
The car is for sale at a dealership that doesn't really specialize in Porsches...they seem to prefer Jags and BMWs. Is it possible that this is a new or reconditioned targa top from an earlier year? Did someone forget to add some type of gasket spacer (like a solid rubber strip) between the weather stripping and the targa top itself? How much would a new or reconditioned targa top cost if this is actually an incorrect top? Thanks in advance, Bill Wagner |

It sounds to me like the window stops are improperly adjusted. The early and late tops are not that much different besides the latching mechanism. Go back and look at the height of the window in relation to the wing window frame with it rolled all the way up. It should come up almost flush with the top edge of the wing frame. If it doesn't, it's a matter of removing the door panels and adjusting the window stop.

Unfortunately, that's one of the things I studied closely once I realized something was wrong. If the windows were adjusted higher, they would "overshoot" the top of the front triangular windows by at probably about 1/2 inch. The same problem also exists to the same degree on both sides. If it was an adjustment, I would expect one window to be off and the other OK, or at worst different. They aren't. They're both at the same, and what looks to be the correct height. Does anyone know if a targa top from another, earlier model 911 would fit on a 964 in this erroneous fashion? Thanks in advance, Bill Wagner |

I was told that you can adjust the triangular windows also. Perhaps all four windows need to be raised a bit.

The question I'd be asking is "Why would a 911 as new as a 964 have had things changed to the window adjustments"
Targas are wierd. Trust me I own one. They can also be a pain in the ass. If there is one thing that I really wish I had known more about before buying my car it would be spotting problems with the top. There are adjustments all over (rear pins, latchs, side seals, and other weatherstripping) each one of them must be correctly adjusted to ensure a good fit and to keep the rain out. I would be real suspicious about any tampering with a top on a 964. ------------------ Leland Pate ___79 SC Targa |

Maybe whoever reconed the top left the rain gutters off??? that would account for about 1/4-1/2 inch..
