Forged or Cast?
How can you tell if you Fuchs are forged or cast? I have recently switched to C2 Turbo wheels and have a set of 15" Fuchs that will be for sale.
Does anyone know how to tell if they are originals or aftermarket? ------------------ John 73 911S |

Fuchs are forged. There should be a Porsche part number on the wheel.
What size rims? How much do you want? ------------------ Bill Krause '79 911SC Euro |

Fuchs also means "fox" in German, and you should see a little fox stamped into the metal in addition to the Porsche part number and wheel size.

How is Fuchs pronounced? I've always said it: 'Fyooks' (like 'fee' plus 'ooks'), but I suspect I'd be more German-sounding if I said, well, something between 'fooks' (rhymes with cooks) and, er, 'fuks' (rhymes with ducks).
Local notions of slang make me wary about experimenting with the word's pronunciation. [This message has been edited by JackOlsen (edited 10-05-2000).] |

Run your finger around the part of the spoke that is near the lug nut. If this area is very smooth like the rest of the wheel it is probably a forged wheel. Also the info above is correct look for the Porsche part # and dia. "FORGED" into the wheel and the width like J7 or J8 will be stamped.

Be advised the numbers are on the inside of the wheels, inside the "petal", so you have to pull the wheel off the car....a 911.xxxx number with the aforementioned fox logo....

John, with the greatest of respect, are you sure you want to sell those wheels? Your car IS a '73 S, and they don't make that sorta thing any more! Those Fuchs have carried you car in style for 27 years. Perhaps it's going to miss them?
Short term gain may be long term pain.... Just something to think about! ------------------ '72 911 TE |

John,
To echo Matt's very good point...if I were buying a 73S or any Porsche for that matter I would generally knock-off "points" for non-original wheels (esp non-Porsche wheels if applicable.) Wheel Enhancement -- known to be pricey -- charges $375/wheel for fully restored early 6x15 deep Fuchs. You will not want to "re-buy" those wheels in the future if you change your mind. Jack -- AFAIK Fuchs is pronounced kinda like "fooks", as in "spooks" or "dukes". |

Thanks Jack for asking that question..I've always wondered how to pronounce "Fuchs". Before taking GER 101 this semester I've always presumed it was "Foo-schs" which didn't sound right. Now that you've mentioned it...thanks Chris....I can say it without making an ass out of myself.
