Need help ..."Redbook" valuation

Cross-post from OT forum ...to gain more traction over here for the time being...moderator, feel free to remove after a few days if you please...

-----------------------------------------------------

Long story cut short.....

Daily driver recently burned to the ground 2 days before Christmas... (1993 Toyota Corolla DX, 245K miles, AT, A/C., fastidiously maintained, body between "good" and "excellent")

No injuries...and the insurance company ( State Farm) is conducting themselves rather well.....except for this one thing.

They intend to cut me a total loss check based on the AVERAGE value of NADA retail and REDBOOK. NADA, as well as Kelly Blue Book, etc...are easy to find on the web as a counter-check. REDBOOK ( aka National Market Report guides, now offered via Primark) offers a valuation quote only via a hefty subscription service...not otherwise available on internet. Redbook often low-balls too.

If anyone has access to REDBOOK...or has other advice how to get a valuation ahead of time through REDBOOK ( so I have some ammunition in case I need to deal hard with State Farm)..please post here or send PM....or mail me at Wil Ferch at Praxair dot com, and use an "underscore" between my first and last name.

Thanks,
- Wil

Re: Need help ..."Redbook" valuation

My experience: stay calm cool and hold your ground.. they will give in.. I used the classified ads and stood hard on "I need to replace this car, how can I replace it if I cannot buy one that is similar..?". And I kept reading them the classifieds until they wanted to kill themselves.. everytime they told me how much they would give me I'd read another ad to them.

Keep telling them you will not accept a check and at some point you will be forced to take legal action.. the guys on the bottom do NOT want this to happen as it makes them look WAY worse than writing you a check for more than they wanted.

My advice take it or leave it.
