Another oil thread
Recently we had a thread about using cheep oil, I was strongly against it and some folks told me I was wasting my money. Here are some pics of an engine of mine. It has 223xxx on the clock. Nothing but Castrol20W50 since new. I change oil every 3k. The cylinders have no ring groove and the crosshatching looks like it was done yesterday. I apoligize for no cylinder shots I had gotten into the "zone" and forgot. I think this makes my point, good oil!

Well I hope I don't sound like a dork but I am about to sound like a dork. Just because your non cheap oil did not cause engine problems does not mean that cheap oil will cause problems. Lets take a stroll down LSAT (law school admissions test) lane:
Its called the incorrect reversal. Let me demonstrate. All Porsche's are fast cars. My car is a Porsche so it is fast. The incorrect reversal would be: My car is fast so it is a Porsche. Untrue, it could be a McLaren or Ferrari. In your example: My good oil caused little engine wear. Your incorrect reversal: My engine has little engine wear so my oil was good. As you can see you have commited the same fallacy. I will say though that you did use a good oil and it is probably why you have little wear but other factors could have caused that and probably helped a ton. I love my 15W40 Shell Rotella T in the fall winter and I think I will try out your Castrol 20W50 in the Spring Summer as we have very hot Spring and Summer temperatures. Sorry if I sounded condesending or mean, I just hate poorly constructed arguments. |
