84 Carrera, I want to convert my Pulleys to Serpentine but not the crazy expensive 1!
I know of the Clewitt system which is awesome but not in my budget. I thought I recall hearing or reading somewhere of others performing the conversion with some FORD parts, I do have AC in my system. Can anyone give me more suggestions or advice, thanks in advance for your time and support. Oh, as mentioned it's for my 3.2L 911 Carrera project.

Why???

Warren,
It is my understanding that the traditional belt system tend to slip at higher RPM's. I'm certain that someone has performed this upgrade before using old parts from other vehichles. What does everyone else think....is it a waste of time and money for the return? Thanks, Alex |
Are you worried about the ac belt slipping? I think it is a waste of time and money to to upgrade the v-belt system thats been working fine on these cars for over 40 years.

I don't think you have any slipping belt stuff to be worried about. I doubt that there'd be much benefit, and no, the parts will probably not be cheap. Seems like a waste of time and money to me.

Good points everyone, I think this project is DEAD.

Alex,
Porsche does things for a reason. THEY WORK! You might be able to improve on some of the things but this is not one that most of us would spend a lot of time nor money on. Make sure you have the two wire cylinder head temp sensor, new DME relay in the car (and old one in the glovebox) then start bringing the suspension up to snuff with new shocks, upgraded torsion bars and so on. These are a much better place to concentrate than a system that works fine as it is. |
Thanks Joeaksa,
The advice is well received and appreciated. Best Regards, alex |
This is not dead....there is ample reason to try to use a VERY small diameter fan pulley to gain substantially improved cooling. I'll dig up my previous thread on this...but got stalled on upper/lower pulley pairing that would work.
I know, I know.... relatively heavy hp losses, but it can make sense in some applications. - Wil EDIT ---> see these links http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=200208&perpage=20&highl ight=ferch%20fan&pagenumber=1 esp pgs 3, 4 http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=170042&highlight=Ferch+ Fan |
I ditched the AC belt and changed the 'service-less' toothed belt on the alternator with the smooth factory belt from the tool kit, which seems to run smoother/quieter. It's about the simplest belt and pulley system you'll ever come across and not worth modifying, IMHO. So maybe you gotta check the tension once in a great while - BFD.
Save your money for some sheepskins. Regards, |
