Preemptive Heat Exchanger Fastener Replacement?
 

The idea is to remove the original fasteners and reinstall new fasteners and fresh anti seize before the bolts and studs have a chance to get stuck and break off during removal.

The car is 20+ years old but only has 30k miles, was in the Phoenix AZ area until a year ago, and doesn't get driven in the winter here in VT.

It seems like this might be a really bad idea, but I'm curious about what other people think.

I would not even think about doing this. I thought mine would come right off as most everything on the came apart better than expected untill the heat exchangers. Five broken studs three came out with stud remover the other 2 are getting milled out with the head job. If it ain't leaking leave it alone. Ninty percent of everything comes apart the other ten percent is a B****.

Yes, it makes sense - sorta - to do this every 10 years...

But if one is frozen, I'd leave that sleeping dog to lie...

Broke two studs myself on my SC the other night. This with soaking with penetrant several days in advance and heat. Really is a show stopper for the garage DIY'er. I am putting on some '74 HEs I picked up recently, along with a tranny rebuild/clutch and tensioner update. The barrel nuts are easy to remove, it is the 13mm nuts that break the studs.
There is no reason to get yourself into a jam (broken studs) if you do not have a good reason to mess with them. YMMV

If it aint broke, don't fix it.
