Alloy "S" calipers
Today I just noticed that the calipers on my 72 911S are rusted. Just checked them with a magnet to be sure, and they are indeed steel. I thought all 911S' had "S" alloy calipers. I've searched all the books I have at hand. Does anyone know when and on what models these were introduced?

Alloy 'S' calipers most definitely came stock on your car from the factory ... so, they must have deteriorated from neglect and been replaced with 'A' calipers which bolt-in, and use the same size pads, too. The 'A' calipers were introduced in '76, and were used on all SC's, and in a slightly wider version from '84 through the '89 Carrera's. ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

How do the "M", "S", and "A" calipers compare. If the "A" calipers are newer, are they necessarily better? I'd like to keep the car original in appearance, but I'm all for making performance or safety improvements.

If you have "A" brakes (911 SC)you can add a 4mm spacer to the bridge and then use Carrera front rotors which are 4mm fatter. The Carrera brake has larger stainless steel pistons that use more fluid so the "A" brake with the bridge spaced out and Carrera rotors works good. When my rotors need replacing thats my plan.

My 78 911SC definately has alloy calipers. This has puzzled me for years. Did some previous owner add these, or did some early 911SC models come with the S calipers?

All SC's had cast-iron 'A' calipers, the Alloys were most definitely replacements on your car. In fact, the last production models to have 'S' alloys were the '77 3.0 Turbos! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

Warren I think If you look in Bruce Anderson's book he says that in early 78' some SC's were being delivered with alloy calipers, but by 79' all SC's were coming with the A calipers.

That may be true, or maybe not! I used Paul Frere's Porsche 911 Story as a source for my statement, and I believe he has far more engineering contacts at the factory than Bruce Anderson!

I have alloy calipers on my car (70T). I was curious about them and have read conflicting reports about them. I think it was Anderson's book which said that the A calipers were made by ATE and my calipers are stamped ATE on the back, but they are alloy. Also they do not look exactly like the picture shown in the book of the alloy calipers which look more rounded and smooth. By the way, Why do the alloys cost so darn much in the catalogs? Even the rebuilt units are far more in comparison. What's the real story here?
