Electrical questions
On my 72 911E previous owner cut out non working Perma Tune ignition and just ran on points and coil. I've ordered a replacement (the one for early 911's cause the wiring harness is gone). I've gone to the Perma Tune website for the instructions. My first question is which wire runs to the tach to make the tach operate? I also have a loose wire just laying on top of the engine behind the fan shroud. It is purple and comes out of the wiring harness behind the fan shroud. Could this be the tach wire? Finally, where can I find the electrical diagram for a 72 911? The Haynes manual has one for 65-69, 71 and 73 forward. Was there a separate one for 1971? Thanks for any and all help.

Kurt V,
The black wire with purple stripe is the tach. lead and it attaches to the distributor points lead at the same point as the Perma-Tune trigger wire. Pelican has color-coded wiring diagrams for '71 and '73.5 T models ... at these URLs: http://www.pelicanparts.com/911/911_Parts/Electrical/911_electrical_1973_CIS_Part1.jpg http://www.pelicanparts.com/911/911_Parts/Electrical/911_electrical_1973_CIS_Part2.jpg The tach. is Unit #67 in part 1, and the trigger lead is wire track no. 43 from part 2. I don't find a solid purple wire anywhere in the engine compartment wiring ... did you mean the black w/ purple striped wire? Good luck! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |
