Front wheel bearing dust covers

Is there some trick to getting these things off or what? They are not like domestic dust covers where you just twist with a screw driver and they pop off. I used channel locks. hammer and screw driver, (carefully of course), a punch. whats the secret, bigger channel locks? I know this is a kindergarten question, but I don't want to to destroy the cover.

Did a search, felt better that I wasn't the only one that had a problem with this simple thing. I'm going to do the 2" muffler clamp method and see how that works.

74-911 - you beat me to the punch... I like the endcap with the slide hammer. I bought the parts sans slide hammer. Now I have to drill the holes and get a slide hammer...

It is really easy. I use a ball pein hammer and carefully hit the dust cover with just a little outward direction, then rotate the hub and repeat, then rotate and repeat. Just make sure you don't hit the studs that mount the tires.

Don't make too big a deal about it. You can't damage the dust cover. You could drive over it and it would look the same.

Good luck!

I second that.....you can't damage it with a small hammer. Whack away. Adjustable plyers won't get you anywhere.

The method posted by 74-911 is the ticket....don't pass this over, it's a must read....

It does the job and is "gentle" on the bearings...no whacking away at stuff no matter how gentle you think you may be doing this....

I just had to pull my covers this week and I used a finish hammer with a seiosly bent claw on it.....The claw side of the hammer was bent so much that it was about parallel with the handle. I hooked the claw on the cover and ever so gingerly pried off of the studs. I pried off of each one about 5 times before it moved at all. Then it came right out with no damage. It took about 1 minute a side. Take your time and be careful.....
