noisy trans
i have a 79- 911 targa. recently, 4th and 5th gear slighty tough to shift into but once in, alot of noise and vibration. changed the cv axle. when driving around 60 mph, disengage the clutch, the vibration noise lessens. i think i need to get the trans rebuilt. question is do it myself or send it out. any suggestions would be helpful.

Do it your self if you have the time and patience to do it right. If you are in a hurry, and can afford it; send it out. John Walkers Workshop in Seattle gets consistantly great reviews, and he has helped out many here on DIY, including myself. I had a trans sent greyhound from washington to orlando for $70.
Since it is in the driveline: trans, axles, wheels, check the following: Rear wheel bearings for axial play Clutch adjustment Linkage I am sure others will chime in, but I think it sounds like a linkage problem and it is not going into gear fully.

I'm with Donnie. I'd look at the linkage first. If that is set correctly, then drain the transmission fluid and check for bits of metal.
Do a search of this forum. There is a lot of good advice out there. (much from JW)
