2.7 rebuilt?

Hi
Winter always brings new project. I have a 1977 2.7l in excellent condition nothing is wrong with it,but I'm looking for more power.Dempsey's book give me good suggestion, but is there more I could do? I'm looking at something for the street, no track.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
Daniel

I don't know if this is a matching numbers motor or if that's even important but it would be much, much cheaper to sell it and buy a replacement 3.0 or 3.2. For a street motor "there's no replacement for displacement".

The problem as I see it that is with the 2.7 when ever you want to do some upgrades to them you have to almost start from ground zero because once you you start removing the the heads to get to the pistons then you run the risk of pulling the studs when you go to reassemble. This is unless the motor has already been rebuilt with case savers.

If the motor hasn't had case savers installed then installing requires splitting the case and then once you do that then you need to verify the line bore which will probably not be round, also do the intermediate shaft and so on. Next thing you know you've got $1000 worth of machine work to the case.

Keep in mind also that a 2.7RS motor has a redline of 7300RPM. This means any ovality, which is common for a used mag case 2.7 line bore will not adequately supply oil to the bearing surfaces for those kind of sustained RPM's. Since you say this is a street motor then it shouldn't be a problem and you might get by without a line bore but I thought I'd mention that.

Assuming you want to stay with your motor and build on it I would suggest the following.

Mod S cams
2.8L 92mm P+C's
10.3:1 CR
twin-plug
carbs or MFI (peferred)
early style exhaust or SSI (prefered)

I just spent $10k of your money but I think you'll be happy with the results.

That would be a very good set up.I have the SSI so only 9500.00$left!!!!! The idea of a 3.2 came to mind, but I could spend 6,000.00$ and still have a used engine. Thanks for the suggestion,I have some thinking to do.....

Take it from someone who had a 3.0 and now has a built 2.7: the 2.7 is much more lively, powerful, and lighter even. All-in-all, it's much more fun than a stock 3.0.

We got a little more than 210Hp out of my RS spec 2.7. I have not driven it yet, but several people tell me that what dd74 says is true. I am dying to drive it!

It's refreshing to hear good things about the 2.7 once in a while, thanks.
