WEVO sway bar mount question...
 

Hi all,

now that I've read most of the WEVO sway bar mount posts, I've concluded that they should fit my 1972.

Question is: I have new sway bar mounting hardware (clamp & bushing) that applies to 1972, which uses a smaller hole spacing, correct? Now, do I only need new clamps with wider spacing or do I need different bushings also?

Sorry, related question: does the tranny need to be in place to position the mounts on the body (to check clearance)? I'm using a stock sway bar (16 mm I believe)

Yes, you'd need new late-style bushings. I doubt they make them in 16mm though.

You could use your existing bushings, and just make a plate to sit under them so thy have a flat surface to rest against. You may even be able to modify your existing brackets too.

As far as the positioning of the mounts, it's not entirely necessary to have the trans in place. The stamped shape in the chassis on each side is pretty accurate as far as positioning, and only really becomes critical when usuing a larger swaybar, or if repositioning has been done to the drivetrain.

If your drivetrain is currently out of the car, then simply remove the transmission mount from the trans, and bolt it up into the chassis. That is what you need to work around.

I recommend bolting the swaybar and brackets up to the new mounts to hold it all in position, then tack the mounts to the chassis. Then remove the swaybar, and finish the welding.

One thing that puzzles me though: between droplink attachment on the banana arm and the mounting point on the chassis of the sway bar there is the connection of sway bar to droplink. Hence, mounting the sway bar and droplink for positioning the mounting points to the body would not seem an exact science, as there is not 1 radius coming from one fixed reference point (am I making myself clear :confused: ). Also, the banana arm itself can alter it's position relative to the body. So how does mounting the whole assambly give an exact location of the mounts?

Maybe I'm making things more difficult than they are... I'm just concerned that the assambly will give issues once it doesn't operate at the intended angles between joints etc.

Don't mount the droplinks to the banana. Well, it's o.k. to mount one just to hold it there. The worry with them both attached, is that it could throw off the mounting and cause pre-load.

The main reason for having the swaybar there is to keep the mounts on an even plane, and make sure there will be no pre-load on the bar-to-bushing contact once it's all welded up. The other reason is for clearancing the bar to the trans mount.

Okido, off to ordering some WEVO's then!
