Lightweight bumpers for 911SC - period correct?
I'd like to replace my front and rear bumpers in conjunction with some body work and paint being done on my 911SC (race only) with something lightweight, preferably FG. Is there anything period correct out there? I've only been able to find the 74 RSR/IROC bumpers, which is really not my cup of tea for the front, and the 911R bumpers. Is anything else out there? I really don't want to make a frankenstein out of the car. I am already in possession on this FG tail from the PO. Thanks in advance for any ideas!

If you're building a race car I don't think you need to worry about period correct - focus on function. Adding a front fiberglass bumper with an effective air dam and opening for an oil cooler should be priorities. You can pretty much put whatever rear bumper on the car that you want, won't have any effect on function for racing.

For period correct but lightweight, how about replica SC/RS bumpers, they'd look something like this, I think they are available in fiberglass:

Brian, TRE makes nice fiberglass front and rear bumpers that will save you some weight.

Some temping options. I like the SC look posted up there - Is there room for an oil cooler? Hard to see front he front view.
David, PMed you back - thanks! Shaun, TRE almost has too much to choose from. Makes me want to add the flares to get some wider wheels in there. Budget restricts me from doing that much this time around. Looking at those makes me lean away from the stock look (as JW suggests) so I can loose all those light fixtures I don't need anymore.

Unless one wants the overblown RSR look which really doesn't look right unless one has RSR flares, nine and eleven-inch wide Fuchs wheels and a big wing, with the bumpers (not the bumpers and valance) one can conceivably lose 50 pounds while keeping the car's appearance stock. A person just needs to know what to take out and off in addition to just the OEM bumpers. As is, the bumpers save about 30 pounds off the car.

It's a Concour Weenie thing....put what YOU want on YOUR car...and drive the pissoutta it.
I respect a well driven, well cared for car more than one that is rolled off a trailer that has 125 miles on the clock....that makes me wanna puke. Drive it like ya stole it....if it breaks...fix it....

. . . and don't let what OTHER do to their OWN cars bother you enough to throw you into a murderous rage.

1. Safety: cage, fuel cell, fire suppression. these have got to come first if you are serious about putting the car on the track 2. Suspension and brakes 3. Shifting and Transmission 4. Motor 5. Bodywork I like to think that a first car should be slow but nimble first. a great way to learn how to drive well. As your skill increases, so do your needs to make the car faster, and obviously slower faster. That's the time to go for the flares, big wheels, big brakes, big motor and ultimately big ego. ![]() Don't try to build the car you think you will need 3 years from now. It's definitely important to have fun in the process of getting there. Just my $.02.

1 - 4 are being covered Shaun and I agree with you (in fact, cage/fuel/fire in process now and the motor is already complete). This is a first track 911, but certainly not a first track car
![]() As for getting into body work now, its because I have some obligatory stuff to take care of including paint, so I'd like to do a little in this area. Since my bumpers are heavy and in poor shape, thought that would be a good start. No flares this time around, which also saves me some $ at the expense of my contact patches! You know, I hate the idea of having to go through bodywork twice, so I was temped to do the flares too, but I have to draw the line somewhere, right? I'm digging my heels in before I get too far down that slippery slope, although I'm pretty far down already. Take it easy Mikez, I already ripped off the side skirts, so it wont be too "correct" ![]() The, any more info on that front bumper? I think thats a great look for the car. That looks better than the original, IMO, but not too "different" either.

I think Shaun's list of priorities is good but I would add oil cooling somewhere after safety and I see a replacement front bumper as part of the oil cooling "package". There are alternatives to replacing the entire front bumper that will still allow a front oil cooler, but as long as you are doing it, might as well do it once.
A quick comment on paint - sound like you may already know this but don't spend a lot of money on the paint job if it's going to be a track car ![]()

Yeah, the paint will be only of track quality. I'm more interested in the prep being done right especially repair of some minor rust spots.
Is there a valence replacement for SC that allows for an oil cooler?

But if you want to get fiberglass bumpers and a valence for a center mounted cooler, why not just get a Ruf fiberglass front bumper? |
