Touchy Gas Pedal

I have a 1984 911 Carrera. The gas pedal is very sensitive on it. It is impossible to cruise steadily unless you keep the car in high rpm's, and even then not always. The gas pedal is just too touchy. Even if you just barely touch the pedal it is accelerating, and the only way to stop is to take my foot off the pedal completely. Is there any way to this sensitivity?

Thanks.

I can think of two solutions, assuming the engine is tuned properly:
1. you can change the ratios of the throw arms at the transmission bellcrank. This will change the rate at which the throttle plate responds to your inputs. While involved, it may be necessary, if you can't live with the stock ratios. This would require some simple fabrication and also adjustment at the pedal to make sure you still can access WOT.

2. you could add a heavier return spring at the throttle plate. This might allow you better modulation.

The throttle linkage on top of the engine (under the intake manifold) has two return springs. Check to see if both are in place. One might have come loose or broken.

I had a similar problem. It ended up being worn carpeting interfering with the gas pedal. I also had a similar problem caused by an improperly adjusted clutch. The clutch cable was rubbing on the throttle crank by the transmission causing the throttle to feel really light and touchy. Just a few things to check.
