What valve covers do I have?
Car is an 82 SC. Both lower valve covers leak so it's one of my winter projects to take care of. Never noticed it until now, but I have two different valve covers (and gaskets). Both look like turbo covers but the one on the passenger side looks like it has black paint on it. The one on the drivers side looks like a regular turbo cover. They look identical other than the black paint. The other odd thing is that the gaskets are different colors as well. The driver side is black (oem?) and the passenger side is red (Weltmeister?). Not only that, there is some waxy looking red sealant on the nuts on the passenger side. It literally looks like someone poured red wax on them. Any ideas? What do you think the black one is?
Thx

well a picture might be good. If they look like these (below) they are turbo covers, which came stock on your car. The different gaskets indicate only one was worked on last time. The red stuff is probably Locktite or some type of thread lock. The color on the cover means one was painted or powder coated.
If you are leaking oil there you might need new gaskets but you also might need new covers if they are warped at all. These covers have a tendancy to be overtightened all the time. ![]() (borrowed the photo from PP parts section)

They are turbo covers, I just can't figure out why one is black. I'm assuming they didn't come from the factory black. Is that right? I guess the PO only switched the one because it was leaking. Unfortunately, that didn't seem to fix the leak.

Go with the thick silicone gaskets. Cured my slight leak right up. They run a bit more but worth every penny.
