Oil Leaks 91 C2
Need Some Help. Got the time yesterday to put jack her rear in the air and check her out. Been having some fairly significant oil puddles on the floor of my garage apparently eminating from both rear ends of the car. Seem to mostly happen with changes in weather. It looks like the oil is coming from the timing chain covers. Planing on pulling the covers and replacing the gaskets. Also, may replace the pressure fed steel oil lines.
1. Is a leak at the chain cover seal common on a 91 C2? 2. Any other thing to do or check when back there? |

I'm no expert but I've read 90' and 91' C2 and C4's leak from the valve covers -- unless your car was manufactured after a certain time frame when Porsche started putting seals on the covers. Hope that helps

The most notorious leaks on the C2 are cylinder head leaks. They apparently aren't really all that common place, but you have a car that's in one of the susceptible years (1990-1991.5 for C2s, 1989-1991.5 for C4s).
I've never heard of the oil leaks you're talking about being common problems assuming you've really isolate the source of the leak...doesn't mean it isn't happening though. Do you have the upgraded (post engine serial number 62 M 06836,M64.01 for manual tranny, and 62 M 52757,M64.02 for tips) cylinder heads? Cars up to these engine serial numbers were susceptible to this seemingly erratic cylinder head oil leaking problem. I would make certain that the source of the leak is isolated...not that you haven't done that, but sometimes a leak can appear to be one place, when the source is in another. Here are some rumors I've heard regarding the cylinder head leaking problem: 1. If this problem is found, Porsche will fix the engine at a reduced cost within 10 years of the original sale and reasonable mileage, provided the leak is wet to the touch. 2. The problem is temperature sensitive. Both points above are RUMORS...I have no proof of either. Supposedly if you argue point 1. above you can get the job done for about 1/2 the price. Hope this helps, Bill Wagner |

My '91 has never had the dreaded cyl. head leak, but it has leaked in other odd places like the oil return line to the T-stat housing (which showed as drip from the T-stat drain bolt) this required removing the pass side rocker panel(#^%&*). The latest one is from the seal for the power steering drive on the front of the right head. This one they say will run about $700 to repair, so for now it just leaks a little and I don't worry about it. Another leak I had was pointed to me at a tech session as the oil temp sender ring seal(on top off block sorta straight under the MAF) this was a pretty easy fix and eliminated oil from pooling on the block. hey just my $.02
