Mystery Washer

I've got an unidentified washer. It's thick and cadmium coated. It has cutouts on both edges such that a cross section is kind of Z-shaped. It fits nicely on the alternator shaft and I suspect it is a thrust washer that presses against the alternator front bearing. I don't have the factory manuals and I think I don't have a schematic of these parts. Can anyone verify this?

I don't know if this will help, but #4 is listed as "spring washer"

Thanks very much, Tom, I appreciate it. I don't know where 4 and 5 go. 7 and the thing between 8 and 6 must be those thin shims. 9 is the cup thingie. So, I don't see the part I am looking for.

This washer MUST be part of the alternator fan system, even though I don't see it in the drawing. Perhaps I'll check my PET program. Anybody else know what this is?

I seem to recall a cadium plated spacer/washer located between the alternator and the fan on my '76. I believe it had a beveled edge or two. I think it is there to ensure the fan pully groove lines up with the crank pulley groove. I'll check tonight as I already have the alternator and shroud off the engine to fix and clean up the mess from all possible **** oil leaks on the top - oil thermostat ring, breather housing gasket (and maybe warped housing), oil pressure switch and breather hose. Cheers, Jim

You are right with 6 - 9, Jim. Hope you counted the number of shims on each side of the pulley - they are used to set the belt tension, and should go back same as they came off. 4 & 5 are the 8mm nyloc nuts and spring washers that run on the alternator body through-bolts, and secure the air diffuser.

Fat lot of good I am, cause all I can tell you is that your mystery washer is not part of the alternator to fan assembly. Not sure I can visualize it, so a pic might be helpful [nothing is certain].
Regardz,

I found a cadium plated "stepped diameter" washer or spacer bwtween the fan and alternator of my '76. It is positioned between the key and the alternator front bearing (bearing nearest to fan). The smaller of the diameters is towards the alternator. Cheers, Jim

That's it! That's it exactly. I can see the pattern of wear matches the location and position you described. Thank you!

Doh!
Pulled the entire assembly apart, taped the alt shaft to keep the woodruff key in place, refinished the fan/housing, polished the pulley and cap washer........

Did all of this without noticing the stepped bronze washer! Sorry.
It screamed at me tonight when I reassembled everything.

So try this......

What country of manufacture can you read on the reddish shaft seal that sits behind the stepped washer?
Hint.....it is Not Germany[on my 85]. Anyone??

BTW...powder coating results were GREAT on the fan, but lousy on the housing - lots of outgassing resulted in lumps and bumps, plus some discoloration [clear powdercoat]. Will have to refinish it, but dont plan to hold up this weekend's assembly for that. I need future projects like this..........maybe next winter.

Yes, I had the same experience. Excellent ppowder coatin results on the fan and every where except the fan housing which outgassed. If you can get the power coater to blast clean and bake the housing for a while before recoating, then outgassing will be less. I am pleased with the recoat results, though a little outgassing still took place.

I'm reviving this old thread because I need to find one of the spacers between the fan and the alternator. Apparently mine got lost between my garage, the rebuilder and then back to my garage. Can anyone tell me where I can buy, beg, borrow or steal one of the spacers?

Is it in this kit? http://tinyurl.com/o3hanj. I have a Paris Rhone alternator, and this kit says it's for a Marchal. I assume the shaft diameter is the same for both alternators and the spacer will fit. Am I correct?

Thanks, guys.
