alternator issues
I had my alternator rebuilt. I assembled the fan onto the alternator and into the housing. I gave it a spin prior to putting it back onto the engine. That’s when I noticed that the fan was dragging or rubbing. So I took it apart and saw that some of the fins (see shiny and not shiny areas, top photo) were dragging on the alternator (see shiny areas, second photo). When you pull the fan away from the alternator it does not drag on the alternator.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1166675560.jpg I realize that the fins are cast parts and not held to a tight tolerance. But, when you tighten the nut (item 11 see bottom picture below) with, belt and all other hardware, won’t that also pull the fan back onto the alternator causing it to drag? Has anyone else seen this? Should I add a shim(s) between the fan and the alternator? From the looks of the wear on the two parts it has been dragging for some time. When I spin the fan it appears to have little or no runout so I don’t suspect a bent shaft. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1166675172.jpg |
Sure that there is not a washer missing inbetween the two?

I recently did my alternator (twice in two weeks) and I had a large spacer about 2 mm around the base of the shaft on the alternator before the fan went on. The shims are the thin washer like spacers, but the first on against the alternator was very thick.

ditto on the 3 Valeos I have. I couldn't find the Bosch to confirm that one. |
Yep, should be a spacer between the bearing on the alternator and the fan.

I'm reviving this old thread because I have the same problem. Does anyone know where I can purchase, beg, borrow or steal the elusive 2 mm spacer? I don't recall seeing it before I took the alternator in for rebuilding, but there's nothing there now.
Thanks, guys. |
