Compresion Test, different with exhaust off???

This might sound like a real dumb question, but I did a compression test on my 2.7 before I took it out of my car. The compression was around 125 on all 6 cyliders. But this is low, could the fact that my Complete exhaust system was off affect this?? If this IS real low what can I do?

The engine is out of the car, I am going to replace some seals that were leaking, plus do the cam tensioner update. So it will be easy to do any work now.

What else should I do??? Suggestions.

Shawn

No, whether the exhaust is on or off would have absolutely no effect on a compression test.

I just read the past posts about "compression". I should have checked these earlier! But I have limited access to computer now!

When I did my compression test the engine was cold, and I only took one plug out at a time. The WRONG way!

Anyways my engine is out now, maybe I'll replace more than a few seals?????

As far as I know the best way to do a compression test is: engine warm, all plugs out, throttle wide open, crank and watch how fast the gauge jumps and how many jumps till it stops. It appears all cylinders were approximately the same which is good. Good luck.

I agree with John, a good consistent reading across the board is a good thing.

It does sound a bit low, but it is consistant and taken cold with a load caused by the plugs being in and ahh what is the compression ratio on that buggy? Was it during an era of low compression which would give you lower readings? You just might have a real good motor!

Did you have the throttle open and all the plugs out? Especially on MFI and carb models this is important because the cylinder your testing cant breathe through the other cyls with the throttle closed so your readings will be low. So try it again while holding the throttle wide open.
