1988??

I am looking at a 1988 911.

Any issues with this year. The car is super clean with 76K miles.

Very solid year - just get a thorough pre-purchase inspection

Not a lot of info to go on. Any records to indicate service or upgrades?

Do a PPI before purchase. A plus would be to have a fellow Pelican check it out with you.

I have owned a few Pcars in the past. I dont claim to be an expert but I have a feel for what to expect.

I know some years have common issues and I am not up on 1988.

Here is a link of the car I am considering.

1988

The car looks nice but you still need to do a PPI. Low miles doesn't always mean a great car. I'm not sure I would buy from a used car dealer, either. Unless they deal in exotics, ,they may not have a clue. I think you might find a better deal in the PCA/Rennlist/Pelican classifieds.

Well for one thing, I bet it doesn't have power steering as advertised on that link

Bingo!

EDIT: Brian, don't take our wisecracks too seriously.
I didn't even drive my 911 until the day I bought it. Had I known then what I have learned here, I would have done a PPI. I was lucky as mine had no issues. I was ready to buy the first one I found but waited until it felt right and jumped in.
You mention you have owned 911's in the past. Let your experience with those guide you. You know what the engine should run like. Same with the trans. I don't know you from Adam but if your are itching to get a 911 NOW , I would suggest being patient and look and drive as many as possible before deciding. Trust me, there is one out there that will be just right. Good luck.

Very nice. Good color combination and pictures show everything is rather original (engine pad, sticker for heater cruise control, etc).

Fire hydrant might be a small hint of a weekend autocrosser so probably well maintained.

Only thing to check in NH would be salt or snow corrossion. Hopefully this was only a good season car and not used during NE snowstorms. (use to live in NJ for 4 years)......

PPI.
PPI.
Car Fax or auto check just to have some extra info..

Good luck. I have an '89 and really love the 87-89 3.2s......

It appears to be worth pursuing from the ad imo. I too would prefer not buying from a dealer as opposed to a 'car guy', but that doesn't mean this one isn't OK. Obviously, a PPI is preferred, but even those aren't a guarantee, and if you've got Porsche experience, that's a definite plus. The '88s are great cars, but at that mileage, I would be curious as to what amount of oil it consumes. Premature valve guide wear appears on a small percentage of these years, and many times right around that mileage interval. Personally, I would never buy a car without checking it out myself.

Brian, Car appears to be identical to mine. Same year, color, mileage, etc. although mine has heated seats that don't work. Nice year. Expect the normal wear items. I've had to replace the following:
high beam switch, heater fan relay, door stays, power seat switch, rear drive shaft (failed CV boot)... but overall a great car.

Price a little high?

Might be just my settings but the cars showing as 1988 Porsche 911 Coupe £19,900.00... 20 thousand UK pounds????

Thats a little high methinks! My 1989 3.2 carrera was only £10,000........

Not really any common "issues" with '88. There were a couple of issues with the early 3.2L cars, but by '88 they were worked out.

Get a good PPI.

G50 trans fork release arm bearing upgrade wasn't done by the factory until April '89....look for this upgrade ( either factory or aftermarket), as it WILL bite you in the future if you don't.

After that...put the numerous fuses that should be there ( but aren't) in-place. There are a lot of areas to consider and are in the archives ( dash light, front A/C condensor fan, etc....)

Also headlight relays....aftermarket.....

Should be a fine car then....

Looks nice,

-Price range is fair, maybe can be had for a little less

-look closely at suspension upon seeing that fire ext. maybe some good stuff in there, and look a the body for any accident history.

-do you need the names of any shops out that way for a PPI?

I'm with you Super Dave. Why would anyone buy any other year?

Because the cars 15 years older are a good bit more fun to drive

Yep, Grant's nailed it.

Looks like a nice car, Brian. Hope a PPI confirms that.
