Help! Intermediate shaft on an aluminum case

This is my first venture into an early aluminum case. I have read the manual and would like some assurances and direction. As can be seen from the pictures, this is the old style intermidiate shaft that does not have bearings. The manual says to measure center to center for 104 mm. Is this to set the correct gears to get the needed click? If so, I take it the slop is what needs to be avoided. The case is marked with a '0' and my gears are '0'. Do I need to do more? I have not gotten the main bearings yet and know the criiticality for gear lash.
The real question that I have is the fore and aft of the intermediate shaft. Pushed all the way into the case, the end protrudes 0.5mm. Push it out of the case, and it protrudes 5.2mm.
What is done to keep the intermediate shaft from moving and wearing out the front shaft cover? Are there shims or something that I am missing? Does it just center itself? Am I missing anything else critical to an aluminum case installation?

The intermediate shaft cover is how endplay is set. The early case has a steel cover to prevent wear. Endplay will need to be set when the case is together and before cam timing is done. IIRC there are both paper and metal shims to achive the desired clearance. The "0" on the gears and the case typically mean you are good. You want 0,0 in your case. If the case had a 1 then you need a 1 gear. You are definitely good if the parts you are using came from the same engine and not pieced together. Variances can develop if there was a line bore done to the case. If you really need to put your mind at ease you can set the endplay with just half the case and "feel" the backlash(click) of the crank/intermediate gear.
