Stalling on Warm up
 

I have an '88 Carrera which runs beautifully. Always starts first time and idles at 800 most of the time. However, it very occasionally stalls during the warm up period. If I drive a couple of hundred yards and then stop for traffic, it can stall. It feels as if there is something wrong in the transition from cold to warm running. Any guesses? - Its's mildly irritating rather than annoying.

Roy, I have similar problems with my '86. My solution: run the car at 1800rpm for a couple of minutes until the engine warms at least a little. Maximum of 2 minutes is all that's needed.

Is it bad running a cold engine at 1800rpms to warm it up? My high idle (CIS) at startup is at 1800 and I think it's too high. It comes back down after a minute or so. I have a neighbor that is "copying" my Porsche, revving his Chevy Dualie at high rpms after starting. Please let me know, thanks.

Matter of opinion I suppose. At 1800 rpm, and cold oil, oil pressure is SKY HIGH. so, the danger to main and rod bearings is zero. At cold temperatures, I suppose piston slap is possible, but I have no problem with my 1800 rpm high (cold start) idle).

Seems to run just fine, and I'll concur with Super's opinion about oil pressure being way up. This is part of the reason the warm up idle speed is higher.

I have to hold mine at 1800 though. It takes just a tiny bit of pressure on the pedal - I think something needs some lube. I'll hit the linkage with WD40.

Thanks for the help Gents - looks like I'm looking for a non-existent problem. It's a pleasure to have a car which, after 90000 miles, is still so good I'm having to search for things to fix!
