Battery Box or No Battery Box

Getting ready for a bare metal repaint. It's a 70 911T with the battery relocated to the smuggler's box. I'm considering cutting the battery boxes off and welding in a plate. This car isn't going anywhere, I've had it 14 years and will probably never sell it. Any reason not to ?? Seems like it would provide a minimal weight savings, but also one that is hanging off in front of the front wheels.

Look at the top and forward surfaces of the battery boxes for holes with plastic plugs. The brackets for thru-the-ghrill fog lights use these holes to mount on the battery boxes.Other than that, once you relocate your battery(ies), the the boxes have no redeeming social value.

Why? Like you say, minimal weight and unless you want to mount an oil cooler in the passenger side, and think you need more room, I'd leave well enough alone. I wouldn't mess up the stock condition unless I had a good reason. Once you cut, it won't be the same again. Having said that, it's your car.
