Air Filter
I have an '88 911 Carerra. I am having a problem re-installing the air filter. It appears that I can only close the front two latches on the air filter box. The back two are completely inaccessible. I now have a 1/4 inch gap at the top of the air filter box for air to "sneak" in. Any solutions would be greatly appreciated.

If you have placed the filter correctly you shoudn't experience difficulties reassembling the airbox. However sometimes it can feel a bit tricky because you can't see what you're doing. Try to hold the loose half of the airbox up to the other part and then feel with you fingers where the latches are. Get a grip on the longest of the metal latches and "lift" it free of the plastic tap to move it over and have it catch. Then tighten the small one to make it "click". I find it easier to reassemble the airbox when tightening the latches hidden at the rear first. Recently I replaced my stock airbox with a HiFlow cone shaped airfilter so if you need a picture of the remaining airbox I can e-mail you one.

Yaami,
I had the same problem, too. In replacing the air filter, I couldn't squeeze my fat arm all the way to the back to secure the latches. My solution?... had my 8-yr. old son do it for me! It was a real sight, seeing nothing but legs and feet sticking out of the engine bay! He struggled a bit, but finally got it on. I don't know who was more proud, him or me!! |

I've got an '85 Carrera with air conditioning. If I want to get the housing & filter out, don't struggle with it... just loosen the air conditioner hose attachment which secures the hose to the engine lid on that side.... you'll have lots more room & it'll only take a minute to move that hose out of your way. Study how the front latches work since you won't be able to see the rear latches. Also, make sure you're putting the filter in the right way.

I have put plastic tie wraps on the small pullum latches in the back. They are easier to pull than the latches. Trouble of course is that you must still get your hands back there!!!
