Wevo shifter against factory short shift kit?
Right now I have a factory short shift kit and it works very well. Only problem I have now is it touches reverse when downshifting from 5th to 4th. I bought it this way, but was wondering if this is common with the short shift kit or that it may not even be related to the kit?
Another q: Will a Wevo shifter shift better than the factory short shift kit? I have read unanymously positive reviews of the wevo shifter but only compared to a stock 915 shifter... Thanks for your views on the subject. (btw, its a rebuild 915 from 1976 with upgraded shifter couplings) Walter |
I can't answer the Wevo question, however if you are nicking reverse from 5th to 4th try adjusting the shift coupling. If you have 101 Projects for Your Porsche it will talk you through it.

I have the wevo, rennshift and the factory short shift on all 3 of my 911's. Well I sold one of them already...
The WEVO feels the best..... |

The grind when you touch reverse is horrible tho. It doesn't compare to a bad synchro. This is twice the noise :( Thanks for your input so far guys! |
Beetlespeed...
The Wevo is quite an improvement on the factory short kit - I have raced both and the benefits are multiple, ie the Wevo is more direct and will center itself btw 3/4. Make sure to use the Wevo coupler as well. As for your factory shifter - if you hit reverse it must be adjusted. Long term damage will be really bad. It's a 5 min job with 2x 13mm spanners. You need to adjust the coupler for/aft - NOT left/right! Regards, T |
Thanks man!
Now you mention that and I think about it, it also makes perfect sense. Good to hear your experience on both the factory short shift and the Wevo. I'll probably go saving for one. The factory short shift kit is probably not to hard to resell anyways ;) |
The factory reverse lockout is superior, to the wevo, in this engineers opinion. As others have said, something is out of adjustment if it's letting a 5-R happen. The factory R-lockout should 'cam' the lever out of the 5-R plane. Whereas the wevo is just a 'stick in the spokes' so to speak.
I had the wevo for a month or so. --The reverse lockout annoyed me with every shift into 5th . . . click. . click . .. The best thing I found about the wevo was how easy it was to get rid of. |
I got rid of my short shift kit and replaced it with the Wevo and it is night and day. A huge difference and I can't imagine it any other way.
|
I agree that the Wevo is much better than the factory short shift also.
The click into/out of 5th can be avoided if the shifter is adjusted far enough forward, I only bump the reverse lockout button maybe one out of 20-25 shifts in/out of 5th. It does make it a slight trick to just catch it and go into reverse, but no problem once you get used to it. |
I dont have the reverse lock out on my Wevo and have never had any problems. seems like it woudl be annoying to have it on there.

I guess I will pitch in my 2 cents for the Rennshift. My SC shifts so nicely I choose not to mess with it but I have a 914 that had very sloppy shifting. I installed new bushings and a Rennshift and it shifts better than new. The adjustment reduction can be 25% or 33%. Shifting is very positive with the option of manual or automatic reverse lockout. Even the tension is adjustable. The fun factor is off the chart!!!

Anyone else in a position to report on their experiences with BOTH the WEVO and Rennshift shifters?
jtkkz - could you tell us in what regard the WEVO feels better to you than the Rennshift? |
I have the Rennshift at 25% or so reduction with an extra tall Momo knob and I like it a lot. Tried my friends Wevo and found the 33% reduction a little too much for my liking.
Only downside with the Rennshift is the shaft is aluminium and the screws for aftermarket knobs can chew into the metal. Not a problem if you use the Rennshift knobs. Don't reuse the stock knob. It can come off pretty easily...ask me how I know and how much it can cost you if you are on the track..... Simon |
beetspeed hi I am looking to change to a factory short shift, u still want to get rid of it ? Peter

The wevo just has a much more positive feel when entering all gears. It feels much shorter on the throws as well. The rennshifter occasionaly gets hard to get into some of the gears especially 1st. My wevo shifter is on my 74 Carrera w/915 trans. My rennshifter is on my 71 901 trans. Overall both good products...... |
Thanks!

Also, comparing the 901 1st gear selection with ANYTHING hardly seems fair!:) |

First I'll take the advice given here and adjust the shift rod in for/aft position to tackle the reverse to 4th whine  Tnx @ all so far for the input. Very valuable to get actual user advises ;) |
On the issue of the Wevo reverse lock-out I also removed the pin. Not because of the click-click sound (you can't hear that with a 3.8 race engine in the back!) but because it catches you when changing fast from 5 to 4.
As noted I have both OE, a car with the factory SS and have had the early model Rennshift. In a RACECAR the Wevo was by far the best option. Not pretty, but it works well. Tom |

What do you exactly mean by 'it catches you' ? and which pin in the Wevo did you remove to prevent this? Thanks, Walter |
