I am going to look at this car -

The owner is a fellow pelican and a german car enthusiast. I am getting good vibes about this one.

Whats your take on the 1986 year model as far as build?

Feel free to PM me also!

For the right price. Obviously, as it's still for sale after two months of listing, the price is not right.

I am not talking price really. I am more interested in the model year and the 3.2. Price is something I can work on the seller with. The condition of this car has been described to me as nearly pristine and given the mileage I expect it to be.

I am happy to pay a premium for an original car that has been well taken care of.

As opposed to a car that has been worked over.

Any issues with this year???

Brian, That's a very pretty car if you are looking for a Cab AND if you're looking for a Carrera. But I think the price is too high.

You're in 964 territory with that price. I thought you preferred a '64? Did I misunderstand that? Get REAL patient, do NOT get set on a given color or even type - Coupe, Targa, Cab... and you'll come up with a nice car if you're willing to spend over $20,000.

It's a little high for a non-G50 Carrera. But looks to be a good example. It's a deal at 17-19. Plus of the 86 is it has the larger dash vents. One year later and you get the G50, a few more HP.

Is it possible to get into a 66k car in top condition with a G50 trans?

I would expect to pay in the low 20's?????

The bottom line is that I want a clean car that needs nothing. I do not want a hacked up 911. Regardless or trans or spec HP.

I sold a top condition, original, 87 G50 in the low 20's. Not a cab though.

They are out there, cab pricing is usually softer in the winter.

Looks nice - my only reservation would be the power top - they are very expensive to fix. Also get your wife to drive a 915 car - I bought a g-50 just because I know the wifey was going to drive too - and she would'nt have been happy with a 915.

Ditto on the 915. They are not fun to shift.

We have 2 '86 Carreras, love both of them. No problems with the 915 on either (one has factory short-shift)...My wife has driven manuals for years and we've had worse-shifting cars for sure...Build on both is fine. Yes, you have some upgrades with 87-89's, but don't sell the 915 short. I'd snatch that car up in a heartbeat for 18K...

It sounds like you're set on this car. Drive it a lot, and see how it goes from 3rd to 2nd. Also, do a lot of neighborhood, stop and go driving. When you come to a stop, does 1st gear engage all the time, or does something seem to be "blocking" it.

I bought a '78, which I still own that a Pelican owner said had a "perfect 915". Not only that, other people on the board raved about the car. The trans was shot, and 2nd gear was useless coming from 3rd. At a stop, it would get hung up going into 1st. I knew this, and it was a bastardized 3.6L, that was re-bastardized into a 3.2L. I got the car cheap, and knew the faults. Regardless, I'm heading off to the garage this morning to start taking the trans apart. 915 internals are ridiculously expensive, and I plan to get near the $1000 mark, for parts. Hopefully, not over...a top end comes after that.

If you plan to to track events, most groups will not allow a cab w/o a roll bar. So plan for that if tracking is the plan...and the typical $3K-$5K most people dump into a "new to them" 911.

Good luck!

The car looks good. If the price has wiggle room, go for it. The 915 is a great transmission if it is adjusted properly. My 86 shifts just fine. I can go into 1st from 15mph without incident. Shifting to second requires a deliberate, slow shift. Any car that is 20 years old has some issues but i must say that mine has been very reliable with NO suprises in 9 years of ownership.

I have had 2 86's, a Targa and a Coupe. Call me nuts but I have no problem with the 915. It is set up perfectly.
As far as the rest of the car goes, the only problem with the pre-993 cars in my view is the a/c system will most likely not work and need much more than a recharge. If that is not a concern, then knock yourself out. The 3.2's are excellent engines and will give good service to you.
Flush the brake system right away, change the tranny fluid to Swepco and stick with natural oil (IMO) for the engine.
Oh, and drive it like it was meant to be driven!

915 transmission shifts so well, I thought they made it for girls? Now drive a 901 if you are a real man.

Brian, where have you been? Where's the 993? Hey, we don't forget bigbpainta, man!

Oh, I just found this from 2 years ago:

Hi Fellas I am alive and kicking!

I hope all is well!

I still check in to makes sure everyone is alright.

Paul its nice to see you are still here to help with the vintage stuff.

Nostatic I like to check in on you to see if your balls are still in your wifes purse. No doubt they are.

I am not into Pcars at the moment I still love them and every time I see one I grin.

My family is growning and my options are no what they used to be.

I drive a 2004 F150 which I enjoy, Its not a Porsche but it has four doors and we all fit comfortably.

Someday a new 911 will surface for me on the flip side 10 15 years down the road.

Until then i wish you all well and godspeed!

I see you've accelerated your schedule to own another. Can't stay away too lnog.

Are you guys with 915 complaints double clutching or just shoving it in there?

phew! I didn't mean to start a 915 vs g-50 debate - and for those of you with a 915 - good for you - I'm sure you are manly men. Brian mentioned in a previous thread - where he was looking at a tiptronic cabriolet - that the wifey might drive it also....

Just from my experience - and that includes driving 915 cars as well as a couple of 901 and g-50 cars, my wife, who drives a stick very well would not be happy with a 915 - nothing more - nothing less....

and now back to the car in question...
