Installing an A/C on a 911SC

Has anybody installed a new A/C system on a car that never had A/C? I'm just curious as to what it might cost, and how hard it would be to do myself.

I've done exactly that to my 911SC '78 some 21/2 years ago. It is an expensive and difficult job and only worth it if you live in a really hot climate where it is impossible to use your car w/o A/C. I installed the exact factory system using a combination of new and used parts purchased from the UK and they cost the equivalent of $3,600 at today's rates. Some basic parts are even unavailable new like the footwell evaporator and you have to seek used. Also the scope of using generic (non-Porsche) parts is very limited due to the idiosyncracies of the Porsche layout.
Work required is also extensive incl. engine out to install the compressor base and cutting an openning in the floorpan, behind the front spoiler to fit the front condenser and its electric fan. Also very long, rear to front hoses must be fitted etc etc.
Another thing to know is that you will lose fresh air ventilation from the dashboard vents, centre and side, because they supply air-conditioned air only; i.e a permanent recirculation of internal air. The passenger footwell is also restricted due to space taken by the evaporator. Also, don't expect the performance of a modern automobile A/C
These are the things I remember and traced from my notes i made at the time.
I don't know if after market systems are any different or if you can get them now.
Hope the above is of help.

Bill, I had this done to my '75 911 about 2 years ago. I bought the complete setup from
Performance Aire in CA. It included the hoses, Seiko rotary compressor, condensers, underdash bezel, blower, evaporator, etc. It was not inexpensive, about $2000 plus about $600 in labor. The setup included instructions for the DIYer. If you are mechanically inclined it looked pretty straightforward. I am sure you could source out all the parts needed for a lower cost. To me it was worth the cost. The A/C works great.
