70 'E Upgrade - 90% complete w/photo

Boys,

Photo update and thanks for all the help from fellow posters. This 2 year project is quickly coming to an end and I wanted to share a photo. I think the license plate says it all ! The State of Florida gave me a hard time with the personalized plate beacuse of the 911. They buckled, I got it. Some of the upgrades(I've got all the photos and doc. if anyone is considering something similar((you must be out of your mind)):

1. All steel turbo conversion including new Nose form gas tank support forward. Correct rear bumper support brackets.
2. Refinished RUF Speedline 17's 9&8.
3. New Koni Shocks f&r, brakes, spring plate bushings, etc.
4. Webered 2.2 with flowed heads.
5. '88 full gray leather interior with sport seats.

and yes, it eats SC's alive. Cheers.

Rich

Very nice! This is/was a '70? You'd never know it now. How about a picture of the front?

RarlyL8,

Yes, this is actually a slightly modified 1970. Heres a shot of the front, although it still needs significant detailing. I have not even completed rubbing out out since it was painted. Enjoy.

Outstanding job! I thought I wanted to refinish my SC red. Feeling a little blue now.

Ditto on the color. Any engine pics? What size tires are you running?

Rich,

I can't speak for all SC owners but I must take exception to what was posted. The SC pictured below "lit you up" just days earlier. Why was this not mentioned? You should be more honest with your "early car" penpals. Dont give them the wrong impression. How quickly we forget previous discussions:

Although it was close, I still got the best of you. I would expeect a little more honesty from my twin brother. Keep trying.

Rob

I'm with Rob on this one.
That body is writing checks 2.2 liters can't cash, "ported heads" or not.

Both of those cars look great, but neither is really going to be much of a straight-line racer. My money, on a small track at least, would go with the earlier car. My 911 used to have a 2.2, and on a short track I would leave a lot of cars with twice my horsepower falling behind me. Vehicle weight and driving skill make all the difference in negotiating curves. Horsepower -- while important -- is generally overrated.

Jack, I agree. Can you believe that there are people in this world that would turn over bags of money to dump their 2.2 in favor of, *gasp* a 3.6 in their early 911! All for that overrated horsepower! =;0

Beautiful, Rich, absolutely beautiful. Nice touch on the license plate! How much did it cost you? I'm also thinking about a turbo conversion (just thinking) and am kinda skeptical about cost. Thanks!

The paint color is a Porsche Original, IRISBLAU Metallic.

The conversion cost would be difficult to calculate. Material costs are simple, it's the labor that kills any of these jobs. Fortunately, we did all the work ourselves. I've got about $14k in materials in the whole job. That includes the car, transport, and every nickel(ask my wife) EXCEPT labor.

The car needed a great deal of sheetmetal repair to begin with so I opted to build something outrageous. The motor and transmission were rebuilt less than 10,000 miles ago but since the car sat for 8 years I decided to completely rebuild the Webers and just fine tune the Motor and service the tranny.

People can say what they will with regards to how much money we invest in these projects, but I can tell you I know every nut, bolt, bushing, shock, etc. on that car. And for the $14k you wont find a more restored 911(top to bottom). This kind of project is taxing but doing the work is half the enjoyment.

Enjoy.

Very, very nice. It's finished (or nearly so) projects like this that give us that have life-size Porsche exploded parts diagrams in the garage currently months or years away from completion hope, and somthing to work towards. My project is nowhere near as ambitious as yours, but tons of work, just the same. Congrats. By the way, Rich-is that the car the Fuchs I bought from you came from? Coooooooooooool. :>

Clay,

Great to hear form you, your site is great. The fuchs you purchased from me were refinished for this car although they never got installled. My "wider" plans made 6's + 7's unworkable. Send some photos of your project and take care.
