Thoughts on Pertronix Ignitor?

Was thinking of replacing my points, but don't have a dwell meter. When I went shopping for one, I began wondering if my money wouldn't be better spent on a Pertronix Ignitor instead. Anyone have experience with this product? Any pros, cons, tips and tricks are appreciated. I'm not having any problems now, and certainly don't want to introduce any new complexities.

I remember the days of setting point gap with a matchbook cover and timing by ear, but in reading how finicky these cars are, I want to be sure I do what's right.

Thanks,

Dave

The p.o. installed one in my car and I can't say anything but good
about it. No points to set and it's nicely hidden in the dizzy.

it's good when it works and bad when it doesn't. won't get much warning so buy two, wire it w/ spade connectors for a quick install and carry the spare, or points. some have had them for years, i've had 2 fail in 2 yrs.

I put one in my 912 and it has been fantastic. One less thing to worry about when tuning. I also like that there is no external clue about the install except the lack of the big capacitor on the distributor.

I didn't buy 2, but carry the points/condensor in my tool kit just in case.

The only thing to worry about during installation is to be sure when you wire it up. If you wire it up backwards you will let the smoke out and it will be toast.

Thanks

I'm very happy with mine, also. Easy installation about 3 years ago.

Are there any recommended timing changes?

Put one in as soon as I got the car, ran perfect for 3 years. Didn't even think about buying a second as a spare.

I replaced my points this summer with the Pertronix. No problems at all. I do carry my points with me in the glove box just in case.

Had one in my 76 and it was flawless. Carried a spare in the tool kit, but I never used it.

Dave, are you counting the one that I gave you? That one was in my 911E for a couple of years before you got it.

Have used them on Corvairs for years (I do carry a spare set of points "just in case"), but never missed a beat....Sure beats setting points gap!

I've had trouble with three sets of Pertronix in 4 years and my mechanic just replaced the Pertronix with points and I'm keeping it that way...

We've installed hundreds of these without any issues. I like 'em.

As noted above, they do not forgive installation errors and I would advise anyone not to leave the key in the "on" position without starting the engine.

Great product.
