Was this a factory option?
I bought an 87 Targa from a guy in Germany and I have found some wierd stuff. Hoping maybe some of you might know something. I couldn't ask the PO any questions (language thing) but before you think I'm a total idiot there was a guy doing rough translation between us. The car is an American spec car that was brought to Germany for whatever reason and had the pleasure of living just outside Stutgart. Sorry about the spelling too tired to look it up. The PO had it serviced there quite often and although the thing has 130k miles it runs as smooth as anything. There has been evidence that somebody at the factory has done something to the motor. I found Porsche tags on the motor in places that were pretty unobvious. If somebody was trying to make it look like it had been at Porsche they had way too much time on there hands. I also have maintenance stamps from Porsche Stutgart. I'm not even sure the factory looks at cars but that is what it says. I'll be there at the factory in a few weeks and I'll check it out. Anybody want anything? Oh I had questions didn't I? First off, was there a factory radar detector offered in these cars? There is one in there and it does say Porsce on it. I was going to take the thing and can it but the more I look at it the more it looks factory, P/Ns and all. Secondly, didn't 87s come with 16" Fuchs. Mine has 15"s but the stickers for tire inflation and such say 16"... leads me to believe they have been replaced. Thirdly, what headlight system was on the american cars? I have H4s on it and was wondering what it came with when it was delivered to California. Lastly, There is a Ranger alarm in the car. I have found no arm switch but when I disconnect the battery and hit the horn it arms itself and is a bear to disarm. Kinda has a round key like the ones used in soda machines. After an hour I found a hole in the siren that fits and disarms the deal. No way that is the way You are supposed to go about it. Must have had a key fod thing at one time. Anybody ever hear of Ranger Alarms? Looks like it probably came from Germany Well I managed to waste up way too much of your space again. Sorry just curious.. BTW, the car has turned out to be a wonderful example of a Porsche. Not everybody gets screwed on the net

All I know is H4s were for the rest of the world, and only the US models had the massive rings with the automatic adjuster holes in it (so a f'ing machine could adjust the lights I guess.) Anyway, the big rings were solely a US requirement, and Porsches originally had the h4 slant back style.
Car sounds really interesting... I want something: pictures of the stickers and the car. Be sure to take lots of pictures of things like the radar detector, get a geocities web page, post em, and tell us where to go!@ ------------------ Kurt B 1984 911 Carrera Cabriolet 75 914 1.8 [This message has been edited by Kurt B (edited 10-17-2000).] |

I've got a site but only a few shots of the outside of the car. www.geocities.com/motorcity/downs/1376
Most of the stickers and what have you are from an american spec car. The airconditioning was upgraded and has a Porsche sticker stating that. You know the Shell lubricant sticker that is over on the left side top of the motor? Well it had some tags like that safety wired to the engine that were in German. Lots of wierd stuff. |

The 15 inch Fuchs were stock on a german 911 in 1987. The 16 inch Fuchs were an extra cost option. As for the radar detector I'm pretty sure it isn't an original Porsche item. Radar detectors have always been illegal in Germany so how could Porsche sell them?
The factory does indeed have a dealership/workshop in Stuttgart, but at the same time there's also an independant official Porsche dealer there. It's not the first time I hear about unusual Porsches coming from the Stuttgart area. Porsche have a tendency of experimenting/toying with their company cars. Maybe your car was once a company car for a Porsche worker? If you have the german FAHRZEUGBRIEF (registration document) you will be able to check the name and number of previous owners. If you need some text translated from german to english send me an e-mail. I'd be happy to help you out as long as it's not the whole owners manual you want translated I bought my 911 in Germany too. Yes I do have the Fazer-thing. I had Porsche UK (where I am stationed now) check up on the car for me. I wanted to bring it back to the states when I am done here so it needed to be a US spec car. It was built and sent to California and had all the Cali emmisions. Any more info and they wanted 50 pounds UK. I'll probably send them the money to learn so more.

Stationed in the U.K. huh??? Lakenheath, Mildenhall??? Sort of like a throwback to the 50s in miniature!!!! I was at Lakenheath from 86 to 90 then went to Ramstein where I retired in 94. I know almost positively you have to be Air force since there isn't much else in the U.K.! Sort of a crazy thing that you dirve in miles per hour in the U.K. but on the "wrong" side of the road yet when you go to Germany you drive on the correct side of the road but its in KPH!!! Have fun!!!

Oh almost forgot...In the U.K. ya almost have to have a passenger in a LHD car as a spotter. Passing those carrot haulers and "lorries" on a two lane road is a real challenge! Crossing the street is a challenge also..have to relearn the look left right left thing!!! To stay safe ya gotta remember look right left right!!!

Mildenhall. Great tour, forcing me out next year. I'll go kicking. It was pretty wierd driving on the wrong side of the road at first but ya get used to it. It is dangerous! Those lorries run into us little car folks all the time.
