I used "speedy metal polish", a rag and a lot of elbow grease. Good wintertime project.

oh
Does that mean it last the whole winter,
if so I've clearly overestimated sod it! I've been at it with wire wool and engine cleaner, and the pitted surface looks not unlike the moon, Think I'll just bail out now and fix the lid shut with extra strong glue......
