Accept it: the 996 look blows
No more discussion about it.
The 993 look kicks ASS. The only look that's better is the 7X-80's Turbo look (assuming it actually has a Turbo in it)...In fact, no look can touch That look. Just thought I'd put this to rest. Oh, and don't argue the point--"Porsche's 996 look will blow, and it will blow hard" was written by Nostradamus, Jesus, and other prophets. ------------------ Kurt B 1984 911 Carrera Cabriolet 75 914 1.8 |

heh heh, funny,
you should hear what the muscle car, hot rod, and import racer guys call the look of the 993. i suppose you know, right? if you feel so vehement about it, you should write a letter to Porsche AG and tell them your concerns. Porsche reads everything that is sent to them. my recommendation though is that if you live in California, have a friend in a different state mail the letter from their address. anything coming from California gets sent to the circular file. well, everyone is entitled to their opinion though. obin [This message has been edited by Obin Robinson (edited 10-18-2000).] |

The reason most of the stuff from CA gets sent to the "circular file" is because we folks in Northern CA are still pissed cause they moved PCNA headquarters from Reno to Atlanta!!! Used to have a great event in Reno normally sponsored by PCNA called Sports Cars and all that Jazz. Gone now!!!! Been there ...have the tee shirt from the last one!!! Don't gamble so no reason to go to Reno anymore.

but do the sacred texts use the word "Cayenne?"
_______ wch 996 on order '94 c2 PS - KB, it hurts now but soon you will fall asleep and a giant pod will grow and you will die but a car guy who looks exactly like you will rise from the pod and drive silently and emotionlessly to the nearest dealership and order a 996. |

Kurt - if you think the 996 was bad, think how bad it could have been if Porsche had continued down the 924/944/968/928 road! Puke!

Sour grapes kids. That's all I have. Sour, bleeding grapes.
I'm single, a programmer, and there ain't now way I could afford a 996. But For The Money, I'd buy two 993s. That's all I'm sayin'. Or a 993 and an 87 turbo. That'd be cool. Think about the ways you could spend Porsche dollars. Porsche offers you 96k in Porsche Goods from anywhere, any dealer or supplier. How would You partition it? I'd go with a 914/6. an 8X Turbo (that's 50-60k right there probably) 356 in as good shape as possible for the remaining cash. Sunday dreams.... Oh, and Mark, you are definitely a trouble maker. The 924 et al rips so early in this innocent post? ! hehe ! ------------------ Kurt B 1984 911 Carrera Cabriolet 75 914 1.8 [This message has been edited by Kurt B (edited 10-19-2000).] |

oh, you meant for the amount of money?
well, that's a different question: if i had $65,000 to spend on a car, then i'd finish my 924 race car conversion: $20,000 buy a 944 Turbo: $10,000 buy a 928: $15,000 buy a nice 911E "beater" to replace the 924 for romping around on back roads: $5,000 use the rest of the cash to support the 924 race car. i agree that i would not buy ONE Porsche when the same cash could get 4 that i'd have more fun with. obin |

also, i knocked down my previous assumption to 65k because that is what my friend paid for his 996.
for your 96k dollar amount, i'd be all over this car in a second: http://www.johnstarkeycars.com/934_0154/934_0154.html been eyeing that for a while now! and i'm pretty sure they'd take 96,000 for it. the immediate runner up for that amount of cash would be a 924GTR or possibly see if one of the 924GTP or 944GTP cars could be sold (snowball's chance in hell though, those cars are priceless). obin |

The prices vary...I was pretty stunned by a 01 turbo for 162k. Almost thought it a misprint. In going to kbb and pricing a 2000 911, I get for my area code 111k.
Touche on the 911 "beater." for 5k. ------------------ Kurt B 1984 911 Carrera Cabriolet 75 914 1.8 |

Kurt,
a friend of ours that recently bought a 996 Turbo paid $111,000 for it. he paid $85,000 for his first 996, and it was LOADED with every option. i have to finish off my "FEWC" collection before i get anything like a 996. i am skipping the 968 unless we can come across a Club Sport. i was about 15 minutes from buying a 911E once. i love them to pieces. why didn't i: had no room ![]() at that point i had a: 1970 Mercedes 280SEL 1979 Porsche 924 (model 331) 1984 Porsche 944 1989 Nissan Sentra literally, NO SPACE! oh well. i'll come across another one. when i do i will gut it and raise hell on the back roads with it. they are just tooo cool for words. obin |

you guys crack me up!
lol! yeah, i love the people that claim that i "don't like the 911". they overlook: ...the 2 dozen model Porsches (of which most are 911s) by my desk at work. ...the Porsche calendar in my office. ...the two Porsche calendars at my house. ...and the Porsche wallpaper on all of the PCs at work. i regularly cycle the images, but right now the background on my wokstation is the 996 turbo, before it was the GT3R, and before that i forget. ...the dozens of 911 pictures on my website. i am more of a FEWC (front engine water cooled) enthusiast because that is what i am mechanically familiar with... and that's what i have the tools to work on. some day, when i have the space (and the time), i think i'll get a 911E. ahead of it in line are: the 924 race car. the 944 Turbo the 928 the 968 Club Sport. you can pick up 911s a dime a dozen around here. there is never a newspaper that is published without at least one "Porsche 911 for sale" ad in there somewhere. i have one of the 4 924s in the county... but everyone else has a 911, or 944, or Boxster. the only big downside about a 911 in this area is that the mechanics have an absolute field day on the cost of labor. all of a sudden the prices fly through the roof when you say "Porsche 911". or they say "sorry, we can't fix that". everyone knows water cooled cars, especially front-engined. this is a hot rod and muscle car part of NY state, so cheap labor is a dime a dozen. cheap air-cooled Porsche labor? fat chance! obin |

old_skul /Mark:
you know, there are a lot of words for people like you, but i don't think that this is the kind of forum to repeat them in. what is your problem exactly? do you suffer from some sort of delusion of grandeur? or are you a "car bigot". i really can't figure out why every time we engage in a meaningful discussion you have to butt in with some smart-aleck remark. you own ONE Porsche but somehow you feel that your remarks will be welcome by all Porsche owners. i beling to many BBSes across the internet, most of them are can enthusiast sites, and they are full of wonderful people. i read this BBS for several months before i joined it. i am on this BBS so that i could take part in meaningful conversations with car enthusiasts such as Kurt, Matt, howie, and lots of other Porsche owners. i don't know why you are here, but i think the term TROLL applies to you. when was the last time you gave some good advice to anyone? i'll give you 10 or so years to respond to that one because i know the answer will be hard to find. were you smacked around a lot as a kid? beat up often? parents drink too much? brught up in a rough neighbourhood? have a physical or mental illness? don't be afraid to admit it. i really can't see how any of your remarks add any friendly colour to any of the discussions on this page. did i say something to offend you? did i call your name? did you see me say something that just hit you at a gut level, and you felt the need to respond. i am so happy that people like you do not reflect the majority, or even the smallest minority of Porsche owners. if i read things like what you post before i went shopping for a sports car, i would pray to God that opinions like yours do not reflect the candor of a Porsche owner. i really feel sorry for you. you remind me of a kid i used to go to school with named "Ricky Hanf". he had a very similar problem. for your sake, i hope you seek professional advice because i think you have a deeply rooted personal problem that should be looked after. just remember that every time you point a finger... there are three fingers pointing back at you. obin |

here come the trolls. oh well, this WAS a nice meaningful talk. be prepared for some of the most inane and uninformed banter to follow. obin jbanks: yeah, you sure could buy 96 924s for that cash, maybe old_skul should get something cheaper too, after all he said: ------------ http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/Forum3/HTML/001176.html Damn, I thought the *car* was expensive! I'll look into local autox. Anything over $100 is a little steep for a PCA sponsored even, by my reckoning...hey, didn't I pay $42 to even join? Sheesh. Hmmmm. Heavy.
To twist this thread back into normality: I'm intrigued with the concept of repair bills putting people off the idea of 'exotica' ownership. I'm sure everyone has their own reasons for loving great cars, and obviously on this board we share an enthusiasm for Porsche's products. Not that all of us are exclusively involved in them. Variety is the spice etc.. But I firmly believe you don't need to be wealthy to enjoy great things. It's all in the attitude. Invariably, most good things have a cost involved. Perhaps the cost is working your butt off to pay a mechanic, or working at a high paying job you dislike in order to reap personal high rewards in your own time. Loads of examples. The Very cool thing about cars is that although the designers/engineers are mostly extremely talented people, the tasks entrusted to mechanics/technicians are able to be LEARNT by most able, inquisitive people- provided you have access to the correct information. I think this gives most people who are willing the ability to own what they want. The tradeoff is time spent working on their own machines and researching exactly how to do this. The wonderful thing about working on something you are passionate about is that it's a huge buzz. Enjoyable. You get out more than you put in eventually, and that becomes a huge part of the fun in owning a car. Bottom line: All cars are made of parts. Master how these parts work together, learn how to sympathetically repair or restore them, and own your dream with pride. ------------------ '72 911 TE |

Matt:
Bottom line: All cars are made of parts. Master how these parts work together, learn how to sympathetically repair or restore them, and own your dream with pride. excellent philosophy! i spent 18 months looking for the car that i thought i would enjoy as a fun weekend "bomber" and a great daily driver. i literally looked at everythign from Abarth to Zagato. i settled on Porsche because of the craftsmanship, and the very "logical" design in their cars. there were a few others that almost got me, but i stuck with Porsche and i am glad i made that decision. one thing i tell people who are staring to work on cars (and have no experience) to do is: pop the hood and STARE at the car. imagine all the parts interacting with each other. think about WHY each part is where it is. cars aren't just thrown together, they are designed. the engineers and designers put things where they are for a reason. when i first popped the hood of a 944 a long time ago, i said "pure genius". everything was so logical in it's placement. great to see that i'm not the only one that has that DIY philosophy, especially with Porsches. they truly are the best vehicles out there. obin |
