rust repair- what primer/converter to use?

I've done a "search" and got a few ideas but thought I would ask anyway. I have a project car I'm working on where I have cut out sections of rusty floor and I have welded in new metal. Most of the metal is now shiny from grinding but some still has surface rust. I know POR15 is great stuff but it's not available locally. Should I coat all the floor area with a product like Duro Extend and then prime over that? I would use something like Rustoleum rusty metal primer and then automotive primer and then paint. Also when useing seam sealer does this get applied to bare metal or after priming?SmileWavy

If you're going to make the effort to do all the work required to remove the rust on the car, I'd go ahead and order up a good rust encapsulator/inhibitor if there's none available locally. I've used RustBullet (www.rustbullet.com) and it's a very good product. It's extremely durable. I like it better than POR because it doesn't require much prep work on the metal and it's UV resistant. I've also had some good results with Eastwood's Rust Encapsulator (www.eastwood.com). It comes either in a can for brush application or in an aerosol.

go get OSPHO ( osphoric acid) try a hardwarestore, not lowes. if u cant find it, try advance, they sell something that says "works like ospho". brush it on and let it do its thing til dry. then brush off residue. then use EXTENDS, brush it on and let it dry. then paint.
this by far THE best way to treat rust u cant cut out. i even started treating my boat trailer springs like this, they never rusted again..even in saltwater.

Do not pass go, do not collect $200.....go directly to http://www.por15.com/ and buy the POR15. It is absolutely amazing. I treated my '70 911T with it a couple of years ago - so worth it. Locks the rust in its tracks and leaves a nice finish.

Note: POR15 likes rusty surfaces with some "tooth". It won't stick as well to shiny metal.

Like he said...

POR15.

It is in a different class from all others. It is PERMANENT!
