az. smog exempt/collectors insurance.

well had to take duallie(doolie) in for smog check. it was a good trip(passed) that allowed me to charge batteries, and burn some old fuel thru it. while there i asked for the manager of the smog station. when he came into the office area i asked him about the new law that just passed, exempting 15 year old cars and older from smog tests. HE HADNT A CLUE ABOUT THE LAW!

sooooooooo seeing how the rest of the employees for the most part were all ex-cons by their myraid of tattoos from the aryan brotherhood, i decided we had to find out the deeper meaning of the law from individuals who were in the know.

soooo to continue my quest for further enlightenment and burn more premium fuel and charge the hell out of (2) optima batteries we went to liberty mutual insurance company. spoke to the owner and highly decorated insurance sales mgr. thad kirkendoll.

we found out that basically when you receive your yearly " oh sh!! i gotta go to smog inspection" invitation, you must now send a document signed and w/letterhead showing collectors policy numbers, and corrosponding VIN numbers in to AZ DEQ(ariz dept environmental quality). ADEQ will then mail you your current registration sticker. this will have to be completed each and every year.

i placed my giant PITA to pass smog, 1976 SCORE LEGAL CLASS 8 truck and my 1987 P-CAR as collector status. both of these vehicles are a giant HOOT to bring into smog. the '76 has a built to the hilt 383 stroker/never had cats/nor unleaded fuel and its always a giggle when smog techs want me to open front hood of p-car to access engine! this involved rewriting both policies and about 25 minutes of office time. my rates are now cheaper due to less mileage driven etc. the class 8 only gets its batteries charged around here and only driven to baja. the p-car sits waiting only for sunny day highway drives and the track. so i have complied and no longer have to deal with smog PITA tinkering on either vehicle EVER AGAIN!

another feel good happy story!

Charles,

"Signed Document" ... signed by who? Once you send in this paperwork are you then exempt from taking it to the smog station?

Thanks

I would assume signed by the Insurance Company that is providing the Collector Car Insurance coverage. I just looked at my current collector car policy and the cover letter does have the company letterhead and a signature (not original signature however) and references that it is a collector car policy. If they need something more than this it would be good to know since I am soon coming up on my annual "bend over and grab your ankles" emissions exam...

my agent thad kirkendoll signed document on liberty mutual letterhead. yes im sure i can probably get cheaper insurance, but i have been with them 25+ years!!! home and all vehicles.

they do cover me at track as long as it is not wheel to wheel competition, and SAFETY EQUIPMENT in place and IN USE! ie. firesuits/gloves/shoes/helmets/arm restraints/ 5-points etc. fire system.

hope this helps.

Thanks for the details Chuck. Hey I thought the terms "cheap" and "insurance" were mutually exclusive anyway...

Anything new on insurance? Still waiting to hear from my agent. Seems that they all were surprised at the announcement.
