Dumb Question Regarding Heads
Why do 911 engines have one head for each cylinder as opposed to one head for each bank like type 1, type 4 etc?

One head for each cylinder. Three heads on each side connected together with the cam housing. The individual head don't become apparent until the cam housing is removed.

Sorry didn't see the why. I would think that it is if one goes bad you don't have to replace all. I suppose it could be done with one large head. Also if cylinder heights are off just a bit the individual heads can compensate. One large head and all the cylinder heights would have to be perfect to seal. Probably though due to cost.... Just my opinion.

One more time... It would also be difficult to cast a single piece head and provide the cooling fins... OK I'm done guessing now.
