Correct me if I'm wrong as I've never paid to much attention to this before. The Ducktail came out in 1971 on the track, showrooms in 1972 - 1974, right?

I kind of like it even more on the 993, weird.

Cliff Notes Ducktail History:

The ducktail came out in 1973. It was on the Carrera RS and RSR (see attached pic of '73 Daytona 24 winner).

The ducktail was fitted to the '73-74 street Carreras, but it was banned in Germany in 1974 due to alleged "pedestrian safety" issues.

Replaced by whaletail spoiler on '74 Carrera RS 3.0 and many subsequent street and race Porsches.

Just found this thread - out of interest, was it hard to put the ducktail on the 993? As I understand it, the lid and hinges shouldn't fit...

The lid for the 993 was made specifically for that model....it is a completely different lid....the one in the picture came from Rennspeed...and took all of about 15 minutes to line up....the hard part was getting the HEAVY factory assembly off.

993 Duck looks great!

993 Duck is from Rennspeed... How bout the Carrera, whose Duck is it and how would you/your body shop rate the FRP & fitment quality?

The one on the Carrera is from Rennspeed as well....the fit is pretty close...didn't take much fitting and prep work...although the one for the 993 fit even better.

Go with a tail made by Getty, you can't go wrong.

Here's a 996 GT3 RSR...note the baby ducktail that is part of the rear aero package.

hmmm... is it just me, or does the duck actually look more fitting on the 993? i personally am a fan of time period correct parts, but WOW! that looks really cool.

Thank you! I am similarly inclined toward period-correctness, and I originally planned to install the 993 RS tail, as I hated the noisy, overly-active-in-traffic, motorized spoiler. But I always liked the '73 RS/RSR look, and since the 993 bumpers are very rounded, I thought it might work. Then, I saw a pic of a ducktailed 993 on another forum, and that pushed me over the edge.

Another benefit is that it eliminated about 30 lbs. of weight off the rear of the car, as the lid with the motorized spoiler is HEAVY. It also seems to help with engine cooling, as the ducktail creates a high pressure area over the grille. Or it could be that the fiberglass dissipates heat better. In any event, my temp gauge readings are lower since I installed the duck.
