SC mysterios knob

Spent the weekend wiring in a new antenna...and cleaning up some wiring left by the PO's radar detector...

So for you SC owners out there, there is this knob to the left of the fan controls...it is round with only one side beveled, I look behind it and there are like 10 wires, just cut and taped together, serving no purpose whatsoever, scoured the manual for a description, but there is none...

This knob is on the dash not on the the console, right next to the steering column

WHAT IS THIS FOR????

Thanks

Is this a knob to the left of the climate control sliders and to the right of the steering wheel? If so, I think it might be the vestigal remains of the control knob for the old auxiliary gasoline heater (which stopped being an option in the 70s, I think). I would guess that the knob is one someone fitted into that hole for some aftermarket device.

hmmm...I guess....the knob looks OEM...maybe just fill the hole
Any SC owners know???

Also did some rewiring and I found that some fo the bulbs behind my climate control sliders were out...my question is this

The FAN (writing) is always on, when headlighta are on
The Fan symbol lights up when I turn on the fan

What about the defroster off, and the defroster symbol...same deal?? or are they always on...right now they area lways on, I am wondering if my wiring is bad...
Also where do you get those tiny bulb??? One is bad...

Also...for the guages...my tach and speedo are dim at the 12 o'clock position, is that a bulb out, or is that normal, just want to know so when I take apart my guages next week, I am not stranded without replacements...

I have a 1980 SC, the knob to the left of my fan is the control knob for my factory installed A/C compressor. This control is not on the dash but on the console. This knob has an arrow on it showing which way to turn for more or less compressor for cooling. Don't know if this is what you are looking at, hope it helps. John

The fan symbol should come on only when the fan is working.
The rest only with the lights on, even dimmed beam (first step on the switch).
My instruments lighting is bright. There are more than one bulb for each instrument.

Hey 82SC, my car does exactly the same thing with the fan lights. One is always on when the lights are on (to help find it?) the other comes on when the fan is switched on.

I also have dim instruments at the top and have assumed it is bulbs. I think if you search the archives you will find some posts on how to change them (carefully).

for the fan lights they are right behind the dash, but impossible to rech...the wires are blue and brown, you can tug on them and they will come out of the back of the fan control panel.

I found one bad bulb, but couldn't find replacements...so I went to radio shack, but again no luck, but there were bulbs that were similar, but they were not plug in, and had long wire ends, so thought I would try to wire those in....
Then use feel, and long fingers to try to fit them back into the panel...

the fan sybol is short and is activated by the fan speed switch

The others (I have been told) always stay on with the headlights...)

Have you checked your factory stereo? I have the same knob (about 3/8" right?). Mine was in the dash but the PO told me it was a fader switch for the factory stereo which she got tired of replacing after it was stolen for the third time.

I bought a 82 SC about 2 years ago. It had just about every option on it as well (including Turbo wing, A/C, fogs, etc.) Someone even added an alarm but I removed all that wiring since it no longer worked (had been disconnected) and there was no documentation for it.

Anyway, I had that same knob "blank" where yours is but no knob (when I say "blank" I mean there is a round indent (just the size for a dashknob) in the dash vinyl/leather and a smaller hole through the metal backing. So I think it was put there by Porsche for anything to be added later as you chose.

I used the blank to put in a square switch for some new replacement foglights that I've added (removed the old, ugly Boschs and don't use the fogknob over by the lighter though I may connect it through that knob just to make it all Porsche-ish ( --- ha ha! Porsche fanatics never die they just fade away light instrument bulbs) Hope this helps.

Forget to mention that my A/C knobs are all on the lower dash console (the one on the floor through which the shifter passes) and it's factory looking A/C --- agrees with the owner's manual... which, incidentally, I have the original 82 SC owners manual --- came with my car purchase and is old and raggedy... AND it does not indicate anything as being there.

So, I think somebody added something there and then later removed it. Hope that helps (some more)
