Engine/transmission mounts for early 911s ?
On my 1970T with 901 transmission I want to replace the engine and transmission mounts. I can feel quite some movement when shifting so I suspect the mounts became sloppy after 30 years.
Pelican doesn't seem to have engine- or 901 transmission mounts listed in their catalogue for the pre 73 models. Can I bolt-on the "newer" sport mounts anyway ? As always, thanks in advance for the advice. This must be one of the best and most active BBS's around ! Best regards from Holland ! ------------------ Frank Imholz 1970 911T |

Hi Frank,
I just did this to my '70T. The engine mounts are easy, the sport mounts fit right on. The problem is the tranny mounts. The cross-bar suspending the front of the 901 does not allow the replacement of the mounts(on mine anyway). Look at it first. I think you can put on a cross-bar from a 915 that has the removable mounts. You might check with someone else on this. The first thing you should change are the bushings on the shift linkage. They are usually the culprits with most shifting problems. Good luck, Ed |

Frank,
I would replace all of the shifter cup, rod, and coupler bushings, first, as the combined mass of the transaxle and engine is over 500 lbs ... not something you could move or 'feel' with the shifter! After replacing the bushings and adjusting your shifter linkage, I think you shift problems will be history. ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

While I agree whole heartedly with Warren, I would have to say the transmission mounts would be next on the list after all the other bushings have been replaced. I can feel movement (not a huge ammount, but more than I suspect there should be)under acceleration/deceleration through the gear stick which will most likely be these transmission mounts. Replace anyway. It's an old car!

The reason for doing the bushings first is obvious, if 'play' can be felt at the dhifter while trying to 'find' a gear! The complete bushing set is only US$20-30, while a set of mounts is US$100-160!
If you can see the shifter move longitudially while you are in gear under full power, then suddenly back off, and then apply power again, then the engine/trans mounts do have excessive play and need replacing. ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |
