To all you SC owners

Okay...bought my first Porsche about 4 months ago...and I am head over heels...

So I am becoming DIY'er...and I even have an excel spreadsheet organizing all of my projects...sheesh

So....my questions:

I have a slow passenger side window...do I need a new motor, or just a new regulator...because it is my daily drivers, I want all the parts before I tear it all apart.

I have erratic power mirrors..bad wires or bad mechanism?

Window washer does not work...checked the wiring to the water pump...any suggestions?

Fan slider switch is stiff, do I need new cable linkage...just some lube?

needs 3.2L pistons and heads, S cams, SSI exhaust etc...any donations????

Thanks

MJ

No pistons to donate, but I think I can help you with slow electric windows. My driver's side window was slow. I noticed that it would improve if I applied pressure to one end of it as it raised or lowered. I figured I was going to need to replace the whole mechanism.

It just needed to be lubricated. Take off the inner door panel and arm rest, and grease the heck out of the mechanism. Worked like a charm.

oh...one more thing...while I wait for my shipment of the haynes manual...and the bentley manual and the factory manuals....geez

there is a loose ended vacum tube in the engine compartment...on the pass side...my mech says (I really wasn't paying attention because I was staring at the bill!!!!) something about a vacum and smog thing a ma bob...and trying to be kind to my credit card, he said it was not nessary and plugged the end...I think it has something ot do with the vacum system for my CIS...I do get some backfires at start up...I will probably tackle the problem myself...but is it really needed or can it wait??

Thanks

Obviously you have an '82 SC Targa or Coupe?

Mine's an 82SC Targa and one of my power windows was slow, too. Found it to be that the rails and scissor mechanism were slightly bent/misaligned. Look that over first before spending money.

I had flaky mirrors, too but discovered somebody (a RESTORATION -what a joke!- place)had put on a later model mirror on the right side and miswired it since it has a different wiring scheme. Does this sound like your problem Mine would goes down endlessly when I pulled out the rear defogger switch? I don't think the defogger for the rear works at all since I disconnected it which means that the defogger switch was meant to defog the rear and the mirrors (they have a little heater coil in the mirrors to do that) And otherwise would only go left or right. There was no way to make it go up! Upon researching I was able to discover the later model mirror problem --- they look identical on the outside but the mirror's electrical plug has a different number of connections than the wiring on the 82 could use (from the original wiring loom). Upon getting the wiring diagram for the later model and comparing it to the 82's wiring diagram I discovered it was NOT possible to mix the 2 types. Even the switch on the driver's door has to be different! Since my left side mirror rubber was going to crumble-land I decided to buy a later model mirror to match and picked up the proper switch from a junkyard dealer. Now the whole thing will work properly and (I think) you can get replacement rubber for the later model mirrors wheras the older models (earlier than 84 I think) you have to buy a whole new mirror just to get the rubber. Seems like the later model mirror has more plastic (and sunresistant) rubber around the mirror and is the improved version whereas the older model has more REAL?-type rubber that deteriorates. Anyway --- guys have been known to cheat with the new model mirrors to save the cost of buying a WHOLE new mirror. They look OK until you get your baby home and try to figure what's with that wierd mirror movement --- is this your problem (it was mine, though I haven't got around to do the rewiring yet, I know it will fix my problem)

You can check the wiring connections. You'll usually find them 'blue" from corrosion. Sometime just a little cleaning gets em going again. OTH, Window washers are pretty fragile and that dinky little pump tends to die often. Also problematic is the plastic hose taht runs a long way to the acyual squirters. They'll tend to clog from using ordinary water. Even more common are the little squirters themselves. Sometimes, they just need a SMALL pin inserted into them to clean out the gunk that seems to settle in there when they aren't used very often --- most people never use them, I always forget to. The pin-cleanout method might reveal that that was the problem but it may also ruin the squirter but at least you'll know to buy some new ones --- they aren't too expensive.

"Fan slider switch is stiff" --- I've usually traced this to it's final destination (in the front trunk) and found it was actually the pivot point that was tight and just needed some WD40.

"...needs 3.2L pistons and heads, S cams, SSI exhaust etc...any donations" --- yeah, I've got 50 new sets of each that I can't seem to give away to anybody even when I offer to pay freight, do the install-work for them and pay them for allowing me the privilege. Right! --- I've also got some swampland in Florida that I could sell ya! Right!!! Good luck on your donation requests !

thanks Tog...no donations yet, but will let you know

I think we need to sleep and stop drooling over our mechanical wonders sitting in the driveways begging for a ride

My bestfriend from new york came by this weekend, first time since I got the "baby" and I realized what a fanatic I had become...he just did not share my enthusiasim for my car, was puzzled by the air (oil) cooled philosophy, and said he does not even want to talk about cars with me anymroe because I am too fanatical....hahaha...people who do not own one JUST DON'T KNOW!!!!

Vacuum line --- mine had the same dangling, unplugged line --- hmmm --- guess that was standard German sloppy work --- NOT!

I plugged it with a gold tee and don't notice any problems although one of these days I'll get in the back of the CIS and find out where it was supposed to go (NO room back there to see but most of the vacuum lines on my 74 sem to disappear into that void.

As for the smog thingee. My factory manuals indicate that the California cars did have smog pumps (and the other 49 states didn't --- where's the car from?) but since mine doesn't have one either (non-Calif or somebody removed it) I'm not sure how a vacuum would plug into the smog pump or would relate to a vacuum line.
(I could look it up on my factory microfiche but it's so hard to see that stuff with a 10x jeweler's loop that I go blind for an hour afterwards. I'm looking for a way to transfer it to a computer readable CD before I go blind!)

Sleep! Porsche nuts don't Sleep! We drool over catalogs of replacement parts to make our babies as perfect as new!

Mine's got the Turbo wing and front rubber spoiler and all my friends think it cost $60k and is probably new. I point out the new ones to them and they think they are something Japanese. The new ones just don't have that hairy look to them!!

Loaned my car to my 17-year old to drive to school for a month while he was waiting for me to finish fixing a Honda CRX I bought for him (with leaking head gasket). He's on the football team and when I go to the games I'm now known by everybody as the Dad of the kid with the new Porsche! haven't got the heart to tell them it's mine since he is now the "hotty" for all the girls in school. (Man, you really miss the High-School-Harry-with-the-hot-car thing when you get to be over 50... sigh! ha ha)

Plus all that fun you'll have giving the snobby-two-finger-steering-wheel salute to other 911 drivers. The noveau-riche types who drive their Boxsters don't even know what it is and remember: NEVER return a salute to a wanna-be 924 guy. 928, 968, 944 guys --- well, it's tough call there whether you just ignore em or give them a lame little wave --- ha ha

And, if you're really new to the 911 thing then:

don't forget to flash your lights at other 911 guys on the wide-open spaces of the interstate turnpikes and

do remember to be snooty and insist that the expression "the only difference between the men and the boys is the price of their toys" was ORIGINALLY coined for PORSCHE 911 owners!!

ha ha --- enjoy!

The vaccuum line you refer to is probably to your egr valve which is located pass side front of motor youll find a canister which has 2 lines that go to it

The windscreen washer pump is located in the front area where your jack is stored, my pump was shot so I went to a junk yard and found a BWM which had a similar VDO unit took it apart and put the one from the POrsches brass drive gear vs the BMW plastic one in it and then put the POrsche mount on it, took me about 3 minutes, hooked it up and now works like new

You'll find the fan and air control cables in the front cowling behind a big black plastic cover where you can inspect them

Another possibility for the vacuum line is the deacceleration valve. When you take your foot off the throttle, the high vacuum opens the valve and allows a little air to by-pass the throttle (a smog reduction device). These valves often leak, which results in a momentary or permanent high idle. An easy fix is to remove and plug the little vacuum line. The only downside is a very minor amount of pollution.

Another possibility for the non functioning windshield washer is check to see if you have a big washer bottle in the driver side fender in front of the wheel. If there isn't a bottle there(like how mine was) or if it's empty it will not work. Good luck.

You know it's funny. We all know motors need lubricants for their moving parts but we don't think about all the other moving parts on the car that need lubricants. Lubricants dry out over time. As Jack stated relubricate the mechanism and also check the felt rails that the glass slides on in the window frame. Is the felt worn out or just dirty? I don't have power windows but you might also check and see if there is a place on the motor to add light machine oil. Same goes for the fan controls and the mirrors. Lubricate. While your at it. Shoot some WD40 in the turn signal switch as a little preventive maintainence. Graphite for the ignition and door locks. You get the idea. Anything that moves.
