Are all black shocks Boge?
On my 1976 911S targa the front shocks are black.
Replacement shock manufacturers have several models to fit different struts. The struts on my car are painted black. Is it safe to assume they are Boge? The dampers are the original ones & although working okay are probably past their prime. I am doing a full brake overhaul, new tyres, shocks and will then get the alignment checked. The brakes are definately lacking, the car handles very well but I can't help thinking 24 year old dampers have got to be a little tired. Reading other threads on shocks Bilsteins are the likely replacements. Can't decide if I'm wasting money or not replacing them. Koni's are quite reasonably priced also but I have not had great results with their units on various motorcycles I have owned. Doesn't mean their car dampers are bad though. Comments please. JG |

Jon,
I don't think it is safe to assume ANYTHING in the case of a 911 25 year old! I have seen black Koni's on motorcycles, and I have also seen cars with the shocks repainted a non-original color ... such as a 914 with black Koni's! If you clean the lowest 8-10" of the strut with a cleaner such as Windex, you will find the mfr and OEM part number on the sruts. I have installed Koni's on five different vehicles, and they performed beautifully on all five! Four cars have been autocrossed with great success and fun!!! The fifth vehicle, a Datsun truck also was great fun on Pirelli 235/60VR-15 CN-36's, the same tire that came on the '74-'75 RS 3.0! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |
