Hot Question, No Pun Intended

When was Air Conditioning first available on the 911? When did it become standard if it did at all? If a car does not have air how hard is it to install it and what are the effects I should consider? Any other tidbits about air conditioning in Porsches would help too.

PS- When did the 911 first see power steering and power brakes?

Thanks for all your help

Some late 60's 911's had it. Maybe older. It was a rare special order option. Power brakes were 77. Power steering '89 carrera-4 and all since. Except the RS America. Seems to me that all SC's and newer had A/C. I believe from then on you had to delete option it off if you didn't want it. I could be wrong but I've yet to see one without it after about '78.

It took Porsche almost 50 years of making cars before they put in power steering?

In the rear engined cars, yes. With no weight on the front wheels ther wasn't the need for the extra weight and complexity. It wasn't until 911's hit the 3000 pound mark and got all wheel drive that it became necessary. The water cooled front engine
cars had it in the mid 70's from the get-go.
BTW. '48-'89 is only a scant 41 years.

Power steering is a waste! I drove a '93 RS America, which doesn't come with it, and all I could conclude was that it wasn't needed. If the car was 3300 lbs or more, maybe, but for 2900 lbs, forget it. Power steering does nothing more than cramp already cramped quarters and introduces additional repair bills when the pumps start leaking.

Just my opinions,

I think power steering was added more for a marketing reason, than for any performance benefit. People think that for the price of a p-car you should get power steering. Also, Porsche was attempting to appeal more to women.
