Man, what a grease pit.
Yes, there is a procedure for adjusting the clutch (Including the cable) The C-spring tension needs to be released before you can move the cable-ends and the cable needs to sit in the tube inside the tunnel. I suggest that you first have a serious clean-up with steam perhaps? Get a Bentley Repair Manual for your 911. There is a Tech article on PP. You can do a search here but you'll love the Bentley.

ok heres how things look now.
figure 1 shows the housing in its proper placement and the adjusting nuts with the retaining tab between them. figure two shows the cable itsself. i need to obtain about a inch more slack in the cable so i can get the knarp behind the flange on the trasmission. can anyone tell me how i can get more slack? the nuts are backed out all the way on the ajustment.

Your Figure # 1 shows the cable coming down at what appears to be a rather sharp angle from the left. Are you sure you have the housing and cable routed properly?
good luck -

Something looks weird. What year is this 911?
Post a clear pix of the levers etc. so I can see the rest of the clutch adjustment. Like this: ![]()

Did you resolve the original problem which made the cable come apart?
The clutch you have is only found on a 70 or 71. You should have no problem putting on the cable end if 1: You disengage the plastic guide ( I don't know what the correct name is) from the release fork. 2: The stopnuts are positioned full loose, as you have shown. 3: The clutch pedal is wedged up. 4: You put the cable end into the attachment hole and slip on the retainer. 5: Last is push the plastic guide as far as possible onto the threaded cable sheath/stop nuts. Then engage the plastic guide onto the clutch release fork. PS I would consider upgrading this plastic guide to the metal one as the plastic will eventually break off the 2 tabs and strand you. Good luck Ed

fierochris:
It would have been a lot easier if you would have stated the year/type from the beginning. Your signature doesn't help either: 86.5 928s *new baby* 71 911 Targa w/ gas burners, PMO's, *sold* I repeat, take a picture of your clutch levers (like my example) so we can see more. The cable is first attached to the front, then the rear in a certain fashion. The cable you have in the picture is missing the boot and looks kinked. If the cable is old, get a new one. If you want us to help, how us pictures as requested.
