Exhaust smell with heat

Is this simply a leak in the hose going from the exchanger to valve box ?
anyone else have this syndrome?

MY SWAG is you have a hole in a exhaust runner and it is letting exhaust gas into the heater box. Now you need to figure out which side and replace that heat exhanger.

Are you sure it's exhaust smell and not burning oil from drips onto the heat exchangers? If it's really exhaust then you probably have a perforated heater box or other exhaust leak -- quite dangerous! If it's "just" an oil drip, not quite as dangerous but still highly annoying (BTDT).

If it's any help, I have the same smell and figure it is typical of older or "leaky" 911's. The Obvious is oil driping on heat exchangers, burning oil smoke permeating the engine compartment and the old and maybe not so airtight flexible hoses or connections to the flapper boxes are letting just enough smoke in to get that sweet fume smell in your system. I've learned to live with it and since I am looking at a rebuild soonm, I will not have any substantial leaks any longer. The alternative is: no heat and a heavy winter coat!!

Try shutting off the heat when you first start the car and don't turn it on until you get underway. I've noticed that when I start the car with it on the cooling fan draws in the stinky cold-start exhaust and pumps it into the cabin. If I wait to turn it on until the car is moving or at least until its been running for a bit, I don't get that smell. If you still do, and its not a burning oil smell then take care of it fast. Carbon Monoxide is a silent killer.
