Heater Noise

Last week my '86 Targa started making a strange noise. I starts shortly after turning on the heat and goes away a couple minutes after turning off the heat. It sounds almost like a rubbing of some sort. If I open the hood, it sounds like it's possibly coming from the compressor. I have checked and tightened the belts, thinking that maybe the belt was just slipping and that was the sound but it is steadily getting louder. Please help.

check the footwell blowers. They make a screeching noise when the levers are pulled for heat and the fan control between the seats is turned on. The footwell blowers are notorious for this when they get old. I just replaced mine last year. They are located behind the carpeted panel in both the right and left footwell floor area. search for footwell blower and read on.

Check your ambient air valve. Upper right hand side of the engine compartment.

AC Compressor.

Just an update:

Noise continued to worsen, lasting longer. Finally noise sound almost like a low bass sound that rattled the car. Less than 1/2 mile from house and turn into driveway. Getting out of the car there was a very distinct buening smell. I open hood to find the AC condenssor smoking. Before then I never notice condessor to be hot but as you can see from the picture it is taking a dirt nap. After a little research I have decided to completely remove my otherwise antiquated AC system and replace with a Rennair System. I am planning to take it slow and have it completed before the hot, humid South Carolina Summer starts. Any tips are greatly appreciated and updates with pictures will come often.
