Diving Steering Wheels?

I've seen a number of Porsche's with what appears to me to be somewhat odd. I call it a "diving" steering wheel, that appears to be off center from the steering wheel column. When the car is moving forward the top of the steering wheel is at a high point, and when you turn it to the left or right, the wheel dives to the left or right.

This is somewhat hard to explain, but if you put something circular (like a coin) on top of a dowel (a flat end pencil would do) and centered it, as you rotate the dowel the circular object's motion remains symetrical. Now move the circular object up a little and repeat the process, and the circular object "dives" to the left and right as it's rotated.

I've seen this on A LOT of 911s. Is this normal, or is it evidence of a front end collision?

Thanks in Advance,

Bill Wagner

Actually I think that original 911 steering wheels are a bit off center or oval if you like. My original 3 spoke 84 911 steering wheel felt like that at least and it's the samy feeling you get from the 4 spoke ones in the 85 and newer 911s. I have a Momo in mine now and that's 100% circular I think. I'm really no expert, but I don't think the steering wheel can tell if a car was crashed.

The steering wheels are not supposed to be round. They are larger at the top to give better instrument view? Or something I'm not sure.

911's are set up that way so that the wheel won't spin uncontrollably in your hands when rocketing out of a hairpin with sheer drop offs leering at you from either side of the road. It's a control thing.

Sounds good anyway.

Sorry, I've been working non-stop since 6:30 this morning- I'm going for a drive! And yes, my wheel does that too.

My stock wheel does that too. The pivot point looks to be about 1.5" off center towards the bottom. Maybe a little less. Being the lanky guy that I am I was thinking of getting a flat bottomed+dished Sparco Corsa wheel that'll give my knees more clearance. Anyone out there have a Sparco? Any comments? None of the Momos appeal to my bizarre aesthetic senses, despite the huge variety....oh well.
